1984 Brodie Custom

Wow, that really is something special!
It doesn't need much work does it?
Just some cleaning and decals? Or is it without decals original?
This one comes from a time before decals.

This bike was the reason for a thread started by roc6839. We wanted to hear people's
thoughts on what they think this might be called.

This is serial #024. The 24th frame built by Paul Brodie. Build date is October 1984.
Paul built this during the time he was working at Rocky Mountain. This custom frame
was built for a friend and was never meant for Rocky sales.

Between numbers #001 and #023 there are two additional custom frames made
by Paul for individuals outside Rocky Mountain. Even though Brodie Bikes did noy exist yet,
these frames can be considered Brodie's. That makes this the 3rd Brodie frame made.
In addition, unless someone knows the whereabouts of any of the other 23 frames this is
the earliest example of Paul's work know to exist. Whether it be a Brodie or a Rocky Mountain.
Paul says those frame are out there. They were sold thru local bike stores.
Guess I'll have to keep looking.

This fillet brazed frame bears some of the characteristics Paul was doing
on the first Rocky Mountain Avalanche and Tantalus frames made. Such as a sloping
top tube and overly long head tube to be found on the Avalanche. In addition it has a few one off custom touches.
The coolest being the one and only bi-plane fork Paul ever made. He admits to copying Ritchey.
Machined aluminum plugs in the handlebar and stem. Others are the funky front and rear brake cable hangers.
A simialr version of the rear hanger was used on the early Tantalus. Later documented
in Rocky literature as `Hand-Crafted BRODIE Rear Cable Hanger.'

I think this is a pretty special find. A little bit more early Brodie history and a step
sideways from early Rocky as well.

If you haven't read this article on the beginnings of Brodie Bikes it is worth a read.

A very cool bike and find, the rear cable hanger being exceptional.

Confused as to the first thread and reason for it, if you already had the builders opinion, which I would think is the first and last needed.

we started that thread between the time I found out the bike was available and the time I got to go pick it up. hadn't talked to paul yet. just chat amongst the other local retrobikers as to what thoughts were on what it might be called. I blame it on the beers. :D
also sorry you and BC had a few words over it.

Allow me to say one thing, which is that for many years I had/rode a BMW K1200S sport-touring rocket, and frequented a local sportbike forum. Well ... the egos, animosity, anger, personal attacks and regular name-calling by quite a few of the members on that forum were lamentable, and it is soooo very refreshing to find that almost all of the posters/users on this (retrobike) forum are, for the better part and most often, respectful, and somewhat civil.

There generally is a very friendly and supportive demeanor on this forum. Pleasant, really.

cheers ...

Here are a few far better pictures BC was kind enough to take for me.
As you can see he is much better with a camera than I.
