1981 and 1987 Moots Mountaineer Rebuilds

Re:

Love the individuality and detailing in the earlier bike. You just don't get that anymore.

Re:

Got the 87 apart and cleaned. Frame looks good. Some nice patina on it.

Eriksen did some cool stuff back in the day and you can see it a bit easier with the kit off it.

The combination of lug and brazed joints is really pretty. The brazed gusset over the headtube lug is particulay nice. He made all his own cable stops. This one only has the one on the rear stay but the 82 has several. My fav part is how the cable for for the front brake runs through the pinch bolt for the stem. That and the moots mounts :) patented in 1980 and never changed much.

The parts cleaned up better then I hoped so I will get to reuse a bit more then I expected.

Re:

Started sanding down the 87 moots to see how bad it was. The rust coming out of it like an a broken hour glass. I’m gonna send it in to be blasted. Can’t save any of the paint. Dammit.

Re:

Just sat down and reread this. What a saga! I'd love to have an early '80 bike in the collection but you just don't get them on this side of the pond.

Gorgeous bike Jim! Looks like a bike begging to be ridden for hours. Well done as always...

Love that. Full of character. Lovely patina. Nicest bike I've seen in a while.
