Good thread. Enjoy your posts. One thing i have learnt following some threads and one of my own threads is that dating the bike by the components may not always be accurate as the parts could be in stock for a while before being used. I know you have a lot of knowledge regarding serial numbers and frames etc but can I humbly suggest a 1978 date for the bike given that the dates you have for the components are sept 77 and Dec 77 and may not have actually been bolted on a bike until 78? Feel free to correct me. Im kinda new to this. Regards Jonny.

Hello Jonny,
Glad you like our threads, and you’re quite correct, this bike would most likely have been sold in 1978, it’s even possible that it could have hung around in a shop for another year, especially as neither this or It’s sister the Holdsworth Equipe sold very well.
But as Claud Butler/Holdsworth only advertised it in the late 1976-early 1977 Catalogue, my mussings have been more about which one of these years that the frame number related to. There is a bit of a dark-age between 1958 & 1976 when it comes to CB frame numbers so pinpointing it by that alone (although it does point towards a ‘77 number) is always a bit shaky.
The facts I have are;
The six digit starting with zeros first appeared mid 1976 and 005616 is a pretty low number.
The chrome backed olympic bands on the bike aren’t on the early ‘77 catalogue photo, but are as per the late ‘77 early ‘78 range (although this later catalogue didn’t include the Cavalier)
Two pieces of catalogue referenced kit have 77 stamped on them.

So that’s the bases of claiming at as a bike built in 1977. It’ll have to do. :)

Re: Father & Son's touring project -1977 Claud Butler Cavalier

Work, Christmas and work have kept me away from here and bikes in general but I've finally got round to reading a few threads and this one looks like it's going to produce a very very pretty machine.

Oh and keep up the child labour, Jim's doing a cracking job.

Cheers Allen,
He’s got too much homework to catch up on (stuff he should have done over Christmas but ‘forgot’)
so I’m helping him with the Weinmanns...

July 1977 on the Dia-Compe handles... if only frame manufacturers had been so accommodating!

PeachyPM, I knew you would have done your due diligence regarding the date. Why would/do component manufacturers bother to date stamp their components in the first place?.

To be honest, I have no idea. Although date stamps like the above and codes employed by the likes of SR and Shimano have been a god-send to retrobikers over the years.
Perhaps it’s to do with quality control?
Maybe if a part fails they can look at the date a re-call a batch?

Working late today, and only got home after the lad had already gone to bed, but look what was waiting for me on the kitchen table! He’d finished the polishing I’d started and detailed them...I wasn’t planning on going this far, but then I can’t blame him as I’ve set a bad example with blue BMX pads on the brakes

Been a while since I checked in on this side of the site being getting a MTB fix.
But wow what a cranking job Jimmy, looking forward to the finished project looks like the Peachy household is going to have another Holdsworth cousin soon
