Re: Re:
Hello Jonny,
Glad you like our threads, and you’re quite correct, this bike would most likely have been sold in 1978, it’s even possible that it could have hung around in a shop for another year, especially as neither this or It’s sister the Holdsworth Equipe sold very well.
But as Claud Butler/Holdsworth only advertised it in the late 1976-early 1977 Catalogue, my mussings have been more about which one of these years that the frame number related to. There is a bit of a dark-age between 1958 & 1976 when it comes to CB frame numbers so pinpointing it by that alone (although it does point towards a ‘77 number) is always a bit shaky.
The facts I have are;
The six digit starting with zeros first appeared mid 1976 and 005616 is a pretty low number.
The chrome backed olympic bands on the bike aren’t on the early ‘77 catalogue photo, but are as per the late ‘77 early ‘78 range (although this later catalogue didn’t include the Cavalier)
Two pieces of catalogue referenced kit have 77 stamped on them.
So that’s the bases of claiming at as a bike built in 1977. It’ll have to do.

One thing i have learnt following some threads and one of my own threads is that dating the bike by the components may not always be accurate as the parts could be in stock for a while before being used. I know you have a lot of knowledge regarding serial numbers and frames etc but can I humbly suggest a 1978 date for the bike given that the dates you have for the components are sept 77 and Dec 77 and may not have actually been bolted on a bike until 78? Feel free to correct me. Im kinda new to this. Regards Jonny.
