For some time I have been thinking about getting hold of a vintage road bike from the year I was born...1974.

Ideally it would be british built.

Any suggestions of what I should be looking out for would be greatly appreciated.

The world is your oyster really. There are the usual suspects..Woodrup, Bob Jackson, Mercian, Pennine, Holdsworth, Carlton, Raleigh plus a host of other smaller and less well known builders plus shops that bought in and badged their frames like Shorter, CarHall and the like.

How much do you want to spend is usually the deciding factor
