1950’s Dayton Roadmaster.

My mum had a serious stroke a few years ago and we nearly lost her, she has made a super recovery and we talk a lot about her younger days.
She was keen cyclist and used to ride from Peckham to visit relatives along the North Kent Coast and Essex.
We were chatting about what bike she had and she said it was a Dayton, I thought she was getting muddled up because we used to live in Dayton Grove in Peckham.
After a few more chats and a bit of research on t’internet it transpires she had a Dayton Roadmaster.
And so my next project begins, a 1950’s Dayton Roadmaster, it needs repainting as it is a bit too rusty for me and not the lilac colour she had.

She is never going to be able to ride it but it will be lovely to show her it built up, when I told her of my plans and showed her the picture in her inimitable style she said “That’s not a bleeding bike it’s got no wheels!” She started laughing and added “I can’t believe you’ve bought me a load of scrap”.

I always learn something on these builds.
I couldn’t work out why none of the bottom bracket cups I had would tighten up, it was like the threads were damaged or wrong size and if I pushed it they would strip out.
A post on a Facebook page gave me the answer, the frame is fitted with a Baylis Wiley Oil Bath Bottom Bracket. The bottom bracket is fitted with a threaded sleeve which was pulling out of the frame as I tightened the fixed cup.

I guess I am going to have to find a set of bottom bracket cups and axle to go with it.

One like this? From the 'Complete Cyclist' book of the early 50's.

Presumably you have to get the oil nipple in the frame and the hole in the threaded sleeve to line up whilst fitting it.

Yes they must line up but also the threaded sleeve is slightly inset from the outer faces of the bottom bracket. The fixed and adjustable cups I think are slightly different to normal cups and have a slight boss on the inner face that recesses into the bottom bracket so tightening on the threaded sleeve.

This is the complete set, I have the sleeve just need to source the cups and axle.
