My mum had a serious stroke a few years ago and we nearly lost her, she has made a super recovery and we talk a lot about her younger days.
She was keen cyclist and used to ride from Peckham to visit relatives along the North Kent Coast and Essex.
We were chatting about what bike she had and she said it was a Dayton, I thought she was getting muddled up because we used to live in Dayton Grove in Peckham.
After a few more chats and a bit of research on t’internet it transpires she had a Dayton Roadmaster.
And so my next project begins, a 1950’s Dayton Roadmaster, it needs repainting as it is a bit too rusty for me and not the lilac colour she had.
She is never going to be able to ride it but it will be lovely to show her it built up, when I told her of my plans and showed her the picture in her inimitable style she said “That’s not a bleeding bike it’s got no wheels!” She started laughing and added “I can’t believe you’ve bought me a load of scrap”.
