chainset ,you might get some pointers

Only downside is that the bb length is also to do with the chain stay profile and material used. Old raleighs used recycled gas pipes that were several inchesvthick and are far more flared than something using fine chromo or ti. Also a bike with clearance for 3" tyres will have a more flared profile and wider bb than one designed for .5 inch tyres, that's why a single ring dh bike may use a 130mm bb ona 100mm width whereas a road bike with 2 rings will use a 104 on 68

This ones 5 5/8" which is a tad over 140mm..

You mean Reynolds 501 like mine ?

I checked the chainstay and crank clearances today. It has to be a 140mm spindle.

Have you actually removed the cranks and measured the axle length? Shimano's 300LX chainset only ever need 122mm at the most.

I hope you are not measuring the threaded bit as well are you??

Aaargh. The mystery may be solved. I pulled it out of the bike (twice) and measured the dang thing overall, including the thready bits.

Ahem . I guess without about a centimetre of thready bit at each end, I'm down to about 120 or so. Will check next week.
