140mm bottom bracket spindle - Raleigh 1990

Snaffs

Dirt Disciple
Hiya,

I'm rebuilding a 1990 Raleigh Mirage and have some wear in the taper on the B/B spindle. Time for a new one. It's (yep) 140mm long. Google says it doesn't exist. The B/B shell is 68mm so a sealed unit will fit - I checked with a spare and the threads are ok.

Anyone got a clue where I can get one? Ebay shows none too.

Ta.

thats wider than the rear dropouts m8

your digi calipers need the scale cleaned ?

I said it was big. No, it's deffo 140mm, and my 1960 verniers aren't digital. Neither is the tape measure.

I'm going to have to figure whether a 122mm will fit. I know Raleigh did some weird stuff with their bikes, but this takes the biscuit.

The previous owner had it from new. Said all of the b/b was original.

Cripoes.

Campagnolo did 140mm, as did cooks. Both would be far too expensive for this bike. I would aim for something like a 130mm, 122 won't work.

Still think 140 is very strange, do you have a picture of this bb with chainset fitted, would be good to see granny clearance on chainstay & bb shell, is it an old nut and thread type or conventional bolt style for crank bolts ?

Brilliant, guys thanks . I'll pull it apart next week and take pix

The Biopace Exage wears out a bit more each time I go out on it. There's a new crankset going on.

SJS also have that 134 which might be useful. More as it happens.
