Doesn't just happen in the Far East - I won't mention any names/locations but I used to visit a major food manufacturer somewhere in the UK where I could get a Staff discount due to the nature of my employment;

You could buy, for example, jams/preserves in large/tiny jars with plain/fancy labels that went to either 'a-discount-corner-shop-near-you' or Knightsbridge with equally differing prices - for, yes, exactly the same product... :shock:

It's called Marketing!

Where is your point? Just because you can get some 'branded' jam in a tub from a jam factory is absolutely no proof these casettes are made by Shimano. They maybe good copies, yes, but I doubt they are shimano made. Pretty sure shimano own their own factories and tooling anyhow.

The manufacturers don't make ALL their own products - they don't have the capacity - so they provide the tooling to other factories in a reciprocal deal, therefore made 'for' not made 'by' - and the West manufactures hardly anything these days, it's all 'out-sourced...'

If 'cheap Chinese copies' were just that do you not think the huge Corporations legal departments wouldn't soon litigate them out of existence?

...and the jam was just a single example of how the same practice works at home. It applies to virtually everything you buy - if you're mug enough to be a snob for certain Brands because they have a huge marketing budget then that's your choice...

PS; a quote from Shimanos 'Mission Statement...'

"We at Shimano have been providing attractive products with a focus on cycling and fishing, the most popular outdoor sports."

Note the phrase 'providing' - not 'manufacturing...'

Browsing their acquisition history shows just how 'Global' their manufacturing base has become...

The problem with sweeping generalisation is they are often wrong. All the manufacturers? The manufacturer we are talking about is Shimano which incidentally is Japanese - last time I checked (and in fact visited) Japan was is the Eastern hemisphere.

You assume Shimano a) care and b) have a robust enough patent to chase a few cheapo cassettes.


What might hold true in the world of cakes and jam doesn't necessarily hold true in the world of global manufacturing


Maybe shimano outsource manufacture, maybe not. Like I mentioned above everything I read indicates they owned their own tooling and manufacturing facilites. Based on some semantics in their mission statement you would suggest otherwise. TBH I don't really care either way. However in my experience of working with large Japanese automotive (not confectionery) companies they generally exert huge amounts of control over their suppliers - so even if they did outsource I very much doubt they'd tolerate anything going out under a different brand from the same facility.

That's all by the by really. Think this is a perfectly passable Chinese/Far Eastern copy of a Shimano cassette not made by shimano tooling. Up to you to proove otherwise really, and thus far you've failed to do so. Probably the biggest indicator (which you've failed to take on board or mention) is it does look a bit different to any Shimano cassettes. Sorry, won't accept anymore pie based examples to backup your points In fact think I've wasted enough time on this discussion unless of course you can bring something worthwhile.

Of course you are both right. Much too seriously and Shimano XTR M900 is made by Lee Chi who of course then reused the same tooling to supply brake levers for Raleigh Lizards.

I've just put the Eagle next to a shimano - theres no difference to the hyperglide pattern or the finish for that matter.
