the unofficial 'cool' 1980's Reynolds 531/501 bike thread

My old ´87 Alpine Express. Way too small for me, so I moved it on. But it was a fun project to bring back to life. Surprisingly light for what it was, IIRC 2.3kg for the frame and 950g for the fork.

Klein experts! I need (old) Klein serial number/dating help

I saw your thread over on mtbr, so what do you think? Early model, 63th bike build (hex 03F= 63 in decimal)? What I read about ID´ing besides the sn is that only ´85 and ´86 models had the RD cable routing through the chainstay. Models after late ´86 had the routing below the chainstay and...

    Mtb De Rosa Max Or

Hard to judge from the picture, but yes, there are differences, dropouts for instance. Also: Not sure if the painted seatpost was a good idea.

    89 Cinder Cone rescue (hopefully)

Easy does it! Reminds me of when I first moved into my apartement, under the glued down rug and screed- parquet flooring! They must have used real mustard. Same colour degradation, only lasting a bit longer than the consumer stuff. Industrial grade mustard?

    1987 Otis Guy

Wow what a unique bike and very cool story about the respray. Pics from back in the day are another perk getting a bike from the OG owner.

    Kona Track 2 fork

Other items are also quite "sensibly" priced. A nicked American stem? That would be 425$, Sir. https://www.ebay.com/itm/226204058476

Speaking for the Non Ritchey owners: The sn Database has pictures. Hours of windowshopping 🙄

Stunning bike, what a find! Need more photos of the seat cluster area though! It´s interesting to see a later (92? 93?) Max OR tubeset on a bike with oldschool wheelbase and earlier Euclid components.

I´m not surprised given the obscurity.

Wanted 1" 'nice' fork - how big an ask is this?!

Nope the Ritcheys are made by Tange, but the tubeset is different. If you don´t have them side by side the appearance may be similar, but the blades on the Ritchey are thinner and the steerer is internally ovalized ("force directionally butted") which can be seen from below. Dropouts typically...

Possible to have new steerer fitted to forks?

Yeah I´d give Dan a call. If you have a certain fork in mind it can be a loong wait for one with a 200mm+ steerer. Edit: P2s, especially non- triple butted (TBs are even more flexible than the Ritchey Logics), sound like a good plan?

Wanted 1" 'nice' fork - how big an ask is this?!

I don´t want to speak on the OP´s behalf, but I don´t read it all that he doesn´t like Ritchey forks, it´s just that they are really hard to find with a long steerer (ask me how I know). Hence the question about extending. Personal opinion: I find the Logic forks to be almost too flexible and...

Wanted 1" 'nice' fork - how big an ask is this?!

So close - just 19cm :( As an idea: Maybe a Project Two is also an alternative? Catalogue pic from 1989:

Chainsuck - where did it go?

I was wondering how a 1x could possibly get chainsuck as I just get it during shifting. But I know sticky mud, and it sucks. Even on a Klein 😁
