The originals had elastomers only. The spring addition was done by people sick of the elastomers turning to goo over time.

For mountain bikes, the shortest I've known is 107mm. If you go the road bike route you can go down to 105 or even 103mm.

I thought that too. Painting could be the way forward. I'm afraid that the raw polished cast aluminum parts might corrode easily and end up looking crappy and anodizing is just too much work.
