Rear suspension that relied on flex of the chain stays???

Gotta be about 95/96ish early days for full suspension we’ll relitively.

Who was it that did the suspension that looked like a part of the seat stay (where it had gone into a single stay) had been cut out and replaced with a metal tube the seat stay could slide on and it relied on the flex in the chain stays for the suspension effect????

Yeah it was v short travel and probs not all that useful but remember it from when I 1st got my mtb and canny seem to find what it was now.

Know you guys will know

Thanks

John

You mean a soft-tail? There have been quite a few of those. Moots did those in titanium and licensed the system to other companies. Ritchey did a soft-tail in steel. Trek did the STP soft-tail in carbon, heck there has been one in Aluminum too from Castellano. As a matter of fact at some point during the mid 90's quite a few bike companies did have some soft-tail in their lineup. As far as I know, Moots were the ones who made the (quite old concept) popular with mountain-bikes.

Re:

Will have a look at a few of those and see if any jog my memory :). Had possibly thought klein but maybe it was trek ones I remember...

Maybe a project for down line if I get in with my return to bikes. Though defo not an Alu one hahaha

Moots YBB design as mentioned, brilliantly fabricated frame sets , and still going strong

Also notable was the DeKerf Team ST (Softail) that used Ritchey Steel, and also subsequently bonded in Titanium chain stays which gained rave reviews in mid 90s Bike (U.S.) magazine articles. Aquired one via here years ago, but let it go due to change of riding spots.

Can’t find the link to the webpage but the Ibis Ti Bow is an interesting bit later take on the same idea

KHS made a few variants, named "Softail" or something, steel of course, from True Temper tubesets, if anyone has a 18-19" frame up for sale, I'm very interested ;)

Re:

Don’t remember it being a ritchey or a moots but the ritchey frame with ST on top tube and red white and blue colour frame is closest to what I had in my head from back then. Obviously the dekerf looks like what my mind remembered too

You could buy pretty much any of the whole range from Sunn in what they called 'flex' as well as hard tail. An elastomer section in the monostay.
