    GT Outpost Trail

With the rain belting down all day, I managed to make a bit more progress on this one... Brakes and gears now set up (as well as they can be in the garage without a road test!), it's almost ready to go 🙂

98+ BoTM Bike of The Month November 2024 - Amnesty Special. Now taking entries

Loads of really great entries this month! May as well throw my hat in the ring too. @hawkhill97's 2000 Marin Mount Vision Build thread: https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/2000-marin-mount-vision-build.400588/

    2009 GT Aggressor 3 refresh

Mmm, some nice mock ups there. Agreed the 70mm road stem is probably the nicest choice aesthetically at least. I like that rigid straight fork too 😎

    2009 GT Aggressor 3 refresh

Oh wait yours is an Aggressor not an Avalanche so that dreadful pun doesn't even work 🤣

    2009 GT Aggressor 3 refresh

Are you still thinking you might go with drop bars on this build down the line? I reckon that would look pretty awesome on this frame.... Plus you could call it... A Gravel-anche! I'll get my coat 😂

    2009 GT Aggressor 3 refresh

Looks nice, good job! I've got a 2010 Avalanche. Despite it being a fairly basic, bog standard frame, I really really like it... It might possibly be the most fun bike I've ever owned.

    GT Outpost Trail

Wheels cleaned up pretty nicely. I decided to use the original wheels with a 6 speed freewheel - partly because there is virtually zero wear to the rims (while my 7 speed rear wheel is pretty worn), and partly because I'm thinking the 6 speed thumb shifters I've got will suit the build better...

Help me choose a retro full suspension bike…………..

That's going to look awesome! Looking forward to seeing it built up and hearing how you get on with it.

    GT Outpost Trail

Can't quite decide if this works or not! Let's see how it looks when it's fully built up... I used to have a 1950s Raleigh Sports roadster, with super slack head angle and north road bars. Years later I wonder what it would have been like to take down a "proper" MTB trail... I suspect it...

Help me choose a retro full suspension bike…………..

If it were me, I'd go with the 657 all the way, as long as you're not going to be gnar-ing too much shred. I'd also put in a shout for a 1997 - 2000 Marin FRS (Mount Vision, Rift Zone, East Peak etc etc) if the 657 doesn't work out. I love mine, and they're very versatile bikes. Myself I...

    98+ BotM theme suggestions

I like that idea, bet we'd get loads of great entries!

    GT Outpost Trail

Headset is basic but looks to have had a very easy life. I suspect that the whole bike is pretty low mileage from the look of it. A silver one would look so much nicer against that paint job, what were GT thinking?

    GT Outpost Trail

Had a closer look at the old BB and it is indeed bass-ackwards - as the L/R engravings show in the pic. Never knew this was a "thing"!

    GT Outpost Trail

Aha, I'll bet that's it! Thanks for the info!

    GT Outpost Trail

Interestingly the BB shell threads look totally fine. I wonder if it's possible that the cartridge BB is designed the "wrong way around" such that the cartridge is designed to thread into the NDS with a right handed thread. Did such things exist? Will have to have a closer look at the old BB...

    GT Outpost Trail

Was having serious difficulty getting the BB out (bearings weren't in dreadful shape, but had a bit of drag and I've got a nice spare one too replace it with). It's not often "the persuader" comes out from under the work bench, but it saw the light of day for this job. Clamped the BB tool in...

    1996 RTS-3 Decals

I habitually remove all warning stickers myself, to me they're a legal necessity rather than a design feature. A "made in taiwan" sticker I wouldn't remove necessarily, but neither would I be fussed about sourcing a new one for a faithful restoration. I might bother if it was "made in the USA"...

    GT Outpost Trail

Stripped down and cleaned up the frame looks pretty good. It is rather heavy! The paint is really nice, looks blue in some lights and purple in others - very difficult to photograph under artificial light but will get some pics up as things progress. I think it's nice enough that I'll leave it...

    Most pointless question ever

    Speed every time! 😂
  20. hawkhill97

    GT Outpost Trail

Nope, it's pretty heavy! The frame has a sticker boasting of a CroMo seat tube, which I presume means pig iron top tube and down tube. Interesting you sound mention the spatter paint jobs... Was idly wondering about this myself on the way into work. Purple with white drizzle overlay maybe...
