Pump Track Build - 2003 Saracen XESS XTREME

Here's the Tioga stem. It's pretty cool, and would clean up very nicely indeed with some new bolts. However, it seems to be a 28.6mm clamp size, which I've never come across before! The matching bars that came with the bike are cut super narrow so won't be going on the final build. I have some...

Pump Track Build - 2003 Saracen XESS XTREME

Managed to get the cranks off, and touched up the paint work this evening. The phone pic is flattering but it still looks a lot better for it in the flesh.

Pump Track Build - 2003 Saracen XESS XTREME

For the build, so far I'm thinking: 1x8 or 1x9 drive train with chain guide/tensioner Front & rear cable disc brakes Slick tyres The bike came with some fire engine red Tioga pedals & stem. Unfortunately the Tioga riser bars have been cut ridiculously short (about 600mm) so I doubt I'll be...

Pump Track Build - 2003 Saracen XESS XTREME

The frame seems sound after giving it a thorough once over. The fork has some pretty nasty cable rub on the lower crown - this would bother me if I was intending to ride massive dirt jumps, but should be fine for my 4ft max bellyflops! The paint came up reasonably well after a good clean. There...

Pump Track Build - 2003 Saracen XESS XTREME

The crank arms are also pretty damn solidly fixed on, and both the crank bolts resisted my first (still pretty spirited!) attempt to remove them. My usual method to deal with stubborn crank bolts is to strap the crank arm to the chain stay with several old toe-clip straps, and to then use a...

Pump Track Build - 2003 Saracen XESS XTREME

It had apparently not seen a jot of grease on assembly - pretty much every bolt was a struggle to remove. On removing the pedals, instead of the pedal coming out, the threaded pedal thread insert unscrewed from the crank arm - not a problem I've ever had before. The only way I could think of...

Pump Track Build - 2003 Saracen XESS XTREME

Pros It's got a 14" seat tube, which I'm pretty sure is the sweet compromise spot for me I know it's a 2000s Saracen......... but I kind of like it  Can be easily set up geared or SS, has a chain guide Appropriate sort of fork Cons It is hefty (I think a lot of this may be the fork)...

Pump Track Build - 2003 Saracen XESS XTREME

I'm lucky to have a couple of very nice pump tracks within riding distance of me, and have been using them over the winter for a bit of exercise / therapy time when the weather and mud have been so epically bad that I don't feel like going out for a "proper" ride. I've tried out a few...

    Sintesi Snake projects

I quite like the Conti X-Kings - they're really quite fast for a trail capable tyre. Though if you're using it on tarmac, some slicks will make it go like an absolute rocket!

    Sintesi Snake projects

That looks ace! Bet it's great fun to ride when you've got it how you want it.

1999/2000 Marin East Peak / Shoreline Trail

Looks great! Be aware that changing chain ring size will affect pedal feedback to the suspension. If the chain line is below the pivot, pedaling hard causes the shock to extend under chain tension, effectively firming the shock a smidge, which can be quite nice on steep climbs. If it's...

1999/2000 Marin East Peak / Shoreline Trail

Ah that's interesting - my 2000 Mount Vision takes a 30.0mm seat post, which is a trickier size to find. I don't miss having a dropper on mine too much, as the general set up is biased towards longer gently cross country riding, but I think I'd want one if it was set up with wider handlebars...

1999/2000 Marin East Peak / Shoreline Trail

I like it! What dropper post are you using - did you manage to find a 30.0mm one, or is it a 27.2mm with a shim? Or were you brave enough to ream out the seat tube to take a 30.9mm dropper post? They are such good bikes, hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine :)

    2000 Marin Mount Vision Build

Took the Mount Vision out for a nice relaxing ride this evening. It doesn't really like nice relaxing rides, it spent the whole time telling me to pedal harder 😂 Wasn't going to happen today, next time I might have to pick a different bike for pootling around looking at the scenery!

    Bike advice Marin Wolf Ridge

Should be a great bike for that purpose! In that case all you really need to do is eliminate excessive pedal bob (as above) and you're good to go!

    Bike advice Marin Wolf Ridge

Oh yeah, and I'd second the advice above to stick with 3x9 - personally I prefer this to 1x11, and it's much cheaper!

    Bike advice Marin Wolf Ridge

What do you want to achieve with the rear shock? If there's currently too much bob / it feels inefficient and squishy, you could try putting a bit more pre-load on the spring by tightening the collar that holds it in place (this makes it a tiny bit less responsive, but will be fine if the rear...

    Another Moor, another Marin

Dartmoor is definitely worth checking out if you haven't been there. My favourite loop might be from Princetown to Burrator (comes up online if you search for it), or Lustleigh cleave on the East edge is also great. Quite a lot of variety across the area. I did consider selling the Mount...

    2000 Marin Mount Vision Build

Thanks @Tricky1977! Finished this build a few years ago now (see the rest of the rather long thread!) and it's been a gem of a bike. Hope you get the same enjoyment out of your current build!

    Dream build spec suggestions please!....

That sounds nice!!! 3x9 XTR would tick the dream build spec for me very nicely as far as the drive train is concerned. Don't be swayed by the 1x crowd! 😂 Personally I'd really want a dropper post. I know it adds a little weight, but it's so worth it if it's going to get ridden as it should...
