    1986 Rockhopper mod

Got this lovely Rockhopper from @CROB yesterday and been looking at what I can do with it. My plan is to make a real simple and straightforward rim brake single speed with it. Moodboard,

“A modern Geo XC bike without anything extra” FTW

It's nice, but it's a lorra lorra cash for a 90's mtb with a longer reach and bigger wheels.

Imlach's Sweaty Hippie Funk Collection, adventure bikes, rusty rats, cruisers and other alt bastardisations of bicyclery

That’s a 180mm fork but 75% sag just from their weight of the bike!

Folders! Foldable bicycles, minivelos and demontables

Bromptons are a bit ubiquitous but once they’re either worn in to or been customised by their owners they become more interesting, to me. Retail on them is a bit mad but I got my first one, am old short wheelbase one, pretty cheap on eBay and my second came for free because it had been totally...

    Home made wheel dishing guages?

I did a laser cut plywood one a few years ago. It did the job other than not really working so well with a tyre on the rim but I eventually replaced it with the Park one.

Possible to have new steerer fitted to forks?

I’ve done steerer extensions using the chop and slug method, I won’t de/un-braze a steerer from a crown lug as I don’t think it can be done without getting the leg joints hot enough that it might disturb the silver in there. I’ve never built a unicrown fork but have done a few segmented ones...

    Boardman SLR8.6 women - thoughts after 1000km

I was actually working in Halfords when the first Boardman's came out. Bottom end ones weren't too bad but on the top end road ones the rear triangles were all pissed. The inside ring basically lined up with the smallest end of the cassette so if you tried to shift any moer than a couple cogs...

    Boardman SLR8.6 women - thoughts after 1000km

I’ll always play devils advocate on Halfords since that’s where my journey in the bike industry started. Bar tape, the bike will have come from the supplier with the tape fitted. Should it have been sorted if it interfered with the hoods, yeah, ideally but given the staff member that pdi-ed...

    Inappropriate brand/model names

A product by well known German dynamo/light manufacturer Busch und Muller. Cracks (oi oi) me up that their website is, to this day, bumm.de. https://www.bumm.de/en/

How hard (moreso costly) is it to put a modern drivetrain on a vintage mtb?

Have only scanned the thread so may have missed something but... Microshift 11 speed mini group £90. https://sportandleisure.com/products/microshift-xle-x-shimano-11-speed-drivetrain-groupset-11-42t? Leaves £310 of a £400 budget to find a bike with (or upgrade to) an 8+ speed HG freehub...

Early 2000s Jamis Coda with a "polished" finish. Is it really just polished bare steel?

Not sure really. Paint should stick to it alright I think? On road frames that have chromed chainstays and then paint elsewhere the chroming often extends beyond the areas it's exposed, ie, there's chrome under at least some of the paint. As I understand it, in the chrome plating process you...

Chrome or nickel plate. Looks more nickel to me going by the colour.

    My Kona A'HA

Cutting a top tube out and replacing it is an easy enough job. Maybe slightly harder in this case given the second top tube will be bracing the frame but still pretty possible I think. Means a respray though unless you like the ratty look.

What did the Surly 1x1 fork cost bitd?

Either way, £120 seems like mad money for a Surly fork. Admittedly I can't find any examples of the canti only one but there's been a couple of the curved leg disc and canti ones sold on here for £75 and one on ebay that sold for £50 recently. I've never paid (nor gotten) anything over about...

What did the Surly 1x1 fork cost bitd?

??? The 1x1 came out in 1998 and moved to discs in 2002, you asked for the canti version of the fork.
