    Novice project Specialized Rockhopper

I think you have a 'medium cage' mech which might be slightly limited in its overall tooth capacity - what cassette and front chain rings are you running (in terms of teeth)? I would NOT shorten the chain personally - it looks about as 'tight' as I would be take it on the big/big, but it is...

Might as well be a virgin looking for advice

proper mud guards (though difficult to get properly sorted on mtbs without creating an aesthetic catastrophe) would probably do more to keep you dry then clothing :) I too am in the Weege and find a not especially expensive kagoul and just going with MTB style shorts works fine, rather than...

    Swallow Griffon

agreed - I had a muddy fox explorer BITD which came with a complete XCD 6000 groupset (unfortunately including the U-brake) despite the fact it looked great and was functionally better than my mates gear who had deore LX stuff on their rockhoppers, I used to get mercilessly teased because mine...

What Middleburns do I have and what spindle length do I need?

I have the same cranks - so pretty sure they are RS7s though mine are isis rather than square taper pretty sure my BB spindle is around 115mm - but I could be out by a few mm (it doesn't say on it) - and I guess square taper might be different from isis anyway - sorry not much help! If I were...

    Yet another lava dome!!! (1994)

Now that I've got some suitable forks on the way, and look to have hunted down a suitably scruffy flite Ti for some custom refurb ideas (more on that later) the next item to sort is pedals while I am a fan of refurbishing old parts to give them new life, I am also not especially a fan of...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

this is true of course but the question is always by how much :) older RD's rated for 32 max sprockets can usually be pushed fine for 34T and sometimes 36T capacity wise i've found that you can usually squeeze another few teeth without too many issues over the rated max but the more you push...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

I would also be very careful that you're not damaging the hanger threads with this arrangement - getting a properly sized 10mm bolt that screws in correctly would be advisable :)

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

note "capacity" = the max range of teeth difference across front and back - NOT the maximum sprocket size at the back I think you know this, but this does cause a lot of confusion with people mistaking one for the other

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

pics - hoorah! its kinda hard to tell cos most of the photos from the rear aren't quite in line with the cage good you got something sorted on the hanger measuring side - would concur that you should try and be a little more patient and sort that out more accurately - front to back as well as...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

Friction shifters won't "solve" indexing issues - they just remove indexing out of the equation. It's highly likely though that the indexing issue is a symptom of some other problem that moving to friction shifting won't "solve" either. if your ok with that then go for it.

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

Sigh. You are not being attacked - you are being advised to seek external help because you very obviously don't seem to know what you're doing, and you won't post images. if you actually have a suitable derailleur (anything UP TO 9 speed - the pull ratios are the same), a 9 speed cassette...

For Sale Nitto S65 27.0 seat post (unused)

no worries. It looks worse in the images than it really does IRL, but if you're after totally pristine then its not that certainly. If thats the case I would just buy new TBH - any use and there will be some marks for sure. The bottom part finish issues on mine are not scratches - just some...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

indexing has been a solved problem for almost 4 decades now. There's a reason it completely took over - it works when setup properly and is generally a much welcome convenience. I am a confirmed retrogrouch, I still run downtube shifters on my road bike, but I would not wanna go back to friction...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

with friction you control the cable pull manually and therefore the shift of course but again none of this will solve a serious misalignment issue (jf there is one) - if something is out enough or damaged enough to be catching the chain through the derailleur, badly rattling etc, using friction...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

indexing on thumbies works exactly the same as any other shifter - the indexing relies on an accurate cable pull for each click to move the RD the right amount. there is no extra latitude you magically get with thumbies smaller number of sprockets tends to be less finicky than higher though (ie...

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

I suspect however you have some other major problem at the root of the fundamental shifting issues but without some pictures, this is, as others have pointed out, a massive waste of everyones' time. I won't be trying to help further unless you can actually be arsed to post some 🧐

here's the video on doing it ghetto style with a spare wheel screwed into the hanger - this guys youtube channel is great BTW for learning about how to do stuff

What is the maximum tooth sprocket you could fit on the back using a Deore DX rear derailleur?

steel can bend with little issues (unless you go too far of course) - so for steel frames hangers are typically just part of the drive side frame dropout (and have been for almost a 100 years!) replaceable hangers only came in as aluminium and then carbon bikes took over, as you can't bend...
