Re: Wow the mother of all thread resurrections, seven years must be a new record! And yes that is a fine addition to any Fat collection, beautiful :)

1988 Wicked Fat Chance w Mavic Mtn group

I finally got organized and brought both Fats out to my local bike park last night (evening ride to beat the heat). Shootout ride MBA style: two Fats with similar setups on the same trail back to back comparison... aug2019h by shamalama88, on Flickr I took the Wicked out first. It was a great...

Re: Almost Shimano free; all Mavic Mtn build for this 1988 Wicked Fat Chance. I caved and put the black XT M730 cantis on there. They just look right... 20190525_190252 by shamalama88, on Flickr

1988 Wicked Fat Chance w Mavic Mtn group

Re: It shifts great in my shop! I will have to see how it handles real conditions on the trail. I don't expect it to outperform Shimano, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the Mavic drivetrain so far.

1991 Otis Guy fillet brazed #138

Re: So great to see you give such loving treatment to this restoration. All vintage bikes wish they could fall into such capable hands. Very well done, and much respect for your process, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail. Kudos!

1988 Wicked Fat Chance w Mavic Mtn group

Thanks for your input Prodigal Son. The stems are longer than 120mm though, and the smaller TC's Salsa stem has a fair bit of rise, so the final rider position is very similar for both bikes. I like my vintage bikes to have a distance of 22" - 23" from the tip of the saddle's nose to the center...

1988 Wicked Fat Chance w Mavic Mtn group

Re: Re: It's the Mavic Mtn version, it's just lost it's yellow decal. I had no trouble getting in to the big ring, there is a lot of throw range between the limit screws. 20190525_125240 by shamalama88, on Flickr

1988 Wicked Fat Chance w Mavic Mtn group

Re: I bought my Fat Chance Team Comp back in 1989, had it stolen and somehow come back to me 27 years later. I had forgotten just how small it was, that being the trend back then; to ride a smaller frame for technical terrain and 'make it work' the rest of the time. The TC is an 18.5", and...

1988 Wicked Fat Chance w Mavic Mtn group

I picked up the frame (1988, 19.5", True Temper 4130 tube-set) over a year ago, and have been slowly but steadily collecting the Mavic components. When I finally found the wheels I was ready to put it together. 20180121_165707 by shamalama88, on Flickr 20190525_144712 by shamalama88, on Flickr...

    1988 Ritchey Ascent Comp

I just picked up this bike, and am in the process of stripping off all the commuter crap and 'upgrades' done over the years. Taking it back to original spec or close to. Such a great frame/decal colour scheme. Tig welded 4130 chromoly with fillet brazed seat cluster. 20190516_223653 by...
