    Chris King woes

I'd agree that CK has some design flaws that it offsets through incredible manufacturing. Needing to return the whole headset to replace bearings, ie not user serviceable is quite crazy, except that the headset is so well made that the bearings hardly ever need replacing. Another "problem" is...

    Upgrade to 1x???

Good point! I'd forgotten that. Well, here are the price ranges I get (in GBP to make it more relatable for you folk) from SJS, ignoring the very cheapest and most expensive options. Keep in mind you'd buy multiple chains for one cassette and cheap ebay chainrings are compatible across all...

    Upgrade to 1x???

Re: I've been running a 1x8 system for the last 10 odd years, mostly on road, so maybe I'm already a hipsta fashionista  . I'm not after massive cogs, and would actually be happiest with max 32 or 34T with 1x9, but like I said, shifters and derailleurs are thin on the ground. I do go...

    Upgrade to 1x???

My supply of 8 speed parts is dwindling, especially shifters and derailleurs. I've got a few bikes, all ridden, that I want to keep my remaining 8 speed parts for, so I'm thinking it's time to move on for future builds. New 8 speed shifters stop at about Alfine (???), and used shifters are rare...

90's Kona Cindercone & Explosif Reynolds 853 advice please

Re: The tube diameters will be quite different between those two bike, which will account for most of the difference in stiffness. How you judge the bikes will partly come down to your weight and riding style, but I suspect also, what you are used to. If you had gone from the Explosif to the...

Kona 19" - 20" steel frame in Australia?

Re: Not proper vintage, but a steel Unit in 19". Should be easy to convert in to a geared bike. https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/ivanhoe ... 1257194939

    P2 fork question.

Re: One end of the dropout is bent. The inside face is not flush. It's actually more pronounced than in the pic. Given that we've both got similar quirks, I'd guess it's been there since production. Not much of an issue in use in my experience. Taiwanese made konas don't have the greatest QC...

Another one bites the dust: 95 Explosif

Worth sticking something in the Wanted section. The fabled Explosif stash eludes my search too but if I come across anything, I'll let you know. I'm after 18"ers. Good to know there are other RBers in the 'hood! 8)

When will ‘not secure’ retrobike site be made secure?

Scenario 1 1. Assume your RB password and email, bank etc passwords are the same or similar. 2. I get your RB password. 3. Now I know your email. That alone opens up Pandora's box. 4. From your email I know your bank, contacts, etc. 5. "Oh hey honey, it's me, mk one. Bank says our account has...

When will ‘not secure’ retrobike site be made secure?

Probably the scariest thing is if retrobike users' bank accounts were hacked because they used the same password as this site and then it was discovered that the hackers used this site to discover the passwords. I'll leave the fallout to your imagination. Purely hypothetical until...

Kona 'Short Wife', 90s mtb to gravel !!

Nice. You can fettle the feel of the brakes by adjusting the height of the straddle cable. https://sheldonbrown.com/canti-trad.html What's keeping the chain from falling off? Narrow wide chainring?

    P2 fork question.

Interesting. Mine's like that too. Looks like the identical model, off a 97 Kilauea.

When will ‘not secure’ retrobike site be made secure?

As people have noted, this is (or should be) a very simple thing to do. In the meantime, don't use the same login password for any other website, which you should be doing anyway, and don't send sensitive info (credit card, personal info, etc) because it is all "in the clear". Someone could...

Another one bites the dust: 95 Explosif

It's unlikely to be overtightening unless the cage rests against the tube, not the boss. If the cage rests against the boss, overtightening will just strip the thread, it has no effect on the frame. If anything, bolts that are too loose will cause the cage and bosses to wobble in the frame hole...

Another one bites the dust: 95 Explosif

Re: Yep. Looks like it started at the boss. Crack is a spiral that runs the full circumference but separated by a couple of cm of metal. Only used a small water bottle except on the rare epic ride, but it looks like that stress riser and fatigue is what did it in. Happy to donate the frame, or...

Another one bites the dust: 95 Explosif

The bike started making some ominous and very loud cracking sounds a few days ago whenever I put the pedal to the metal or hopped off a kerb. Sounded like something was at the end of its life and about to go. Frantically checked around the welds, BB spindle, cranks, pedals, handlebars, stem...

    Kabush's 2000 Olympic Kona hardtail

Not often you see something like this on Gumtree... Advertised as an Explosif, but it's aluminium. Maybe that was a thing. https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/wynnum/ ... 1256422617 And on ebay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Kona-Explos ... ctupt=true
