    Surly 1x1

Wow usually b/w looks tacky often, but with the white frame decals it really works! Just googling round for my own 1x1 build (Gen canti+disc) Great Inspiration!

Fork crowns: in-between lugged and unicrown

Been wondering about this for some time. Is there a name for this style of fork crown like the Columbus Matrix one below? It's neither traditionally lugged, nor classic unicrown. IMO it's the nicest match for non-lugged steel frames. Any known moniker for this crown? Thanks. Been

    Retro crank for commuter

Re: Ouch the crank arms slide onto the JIS taper 2/3rds of the way only. Looks like i might have to slightly mill the taper.

    Retro crank for commuter

Re: Ok well almost sorted, including chainring. But what chainring bolts are the right ones? There are so many I didn't realise. Thanks.

    Retro crank for commuter

Re: Thanks again. Found a Campy Super Record crankset at a quite good price (mid double figures). Anyone know off hand if this is JIS or ISO taper?

    Retro crank for commuter

Re: @hamster yup, square taper for sure, anyway seems to be what all the vintage cranks are using, and lends itself nicely to chainline tweaks when using a 2x crankset in 1x mode. This brings me to another question. Is it possible to use an "inner" chainring in the outer position for a 1x...

    Retro crank for commuter

Built myself a bike on this same frame https://www.flickr.com/photos/paste/2692629464 (not my flickr). Quite perfect for commuting with its mid-range brakes making room for fenders. Only missing a crank at this point. I'm running 1x10 with a downtube shifter, my commute is quite flat, but often...

Help removing old square taper BB

Thanks everyone, went quite smoothly. Unfortunately my spanner for the NDS doesn't look like the one above, but like that: So I took off the outer NDS ring with a pipe wrench. The BB is shot anyway. Good news: no corrosion inside BB. Found an old 6-speed wheelset in the in-laws' basement...

    Peugeot Galibier

Nice bike, that I stumbled across when researching Galibiers. Any details on the reach of the brakes needed? Are they short or mid reach? Thanks.

    Which medium reach framesets

Been looking around a bit and there seem to be a few Peugeot models with mid reach caliper configuration. But hard to get the info from random classifieds sellers. One is from a Galibier, the other from a PH11 model. Would you reckon those are medium reach (47-57mm)? PS: Weimann 500 seems to...

    Which medium reach framesets

Re: Oh, right, I do prefer roadish geometry and 700C would also be good because I have a few wheelsets in that size. Cheers.

    Which medium reach framesets

Looking for a vintage road(-ish) frameset for medium reach brakes (47-57mm). Unfortunately most sellers don't specify that (and most framesets seem to be for short reach anyway). What are nice frames to look for? If a frame has fender eyelets, does that mean it's usually more than short reach...

Vintage Stumpy or KHS Turbo for long range commuter

Re: Honestly I don't get to ride much apart from commuting. And locking away the bike properly is neither a problem at home, nor at work. So I'd rather take one of the vintage frames (there's a handful  ) and put it to work. The commute part of the trip is going to be only 10k sometimes...

Vintage Stumpy or KHS Turbo for long range commuter

Background: my new work site is like 2h away on the train. Good news: I don't need to go every day and there's some great countryside terrain in between here and there. Also no problem splitting the distance between train and bike. So it's time to build a nice commuter / touring bike. Naturally...

Help removing old square taper BB

Huh I thought from seattube forward (pedaling direction) would tighten the BB, so it doesn't loosen from pedaling while in use? Am i totally confused?

Help removing old square taper BB

Hello, sorry I am a bit of a clean slate when it comes to vintage parts. Could anyone provide a pointer or instructions for removing this BB? I have the 3 different spanners (the one with pins and one with teeth for non-drive side, and the "36" one for DS). What order do the parts come off, and...

    Stumpjumper 1994 fork measurements

Hello. I have an olive green 1994 Stumpjumper frame on the stand. No original fork, so I got myself a Kuwahara one to try, but the head angle looks way too flat/slack when comparing to the lovely builds here. Could anyone give a hint/estimation of what the fork should be like for close to...

1 1/8 steerer frames with generous tyre clearance?

Re: Would you believe it, I found a used 1999-ish (per seller) 1x1 in my size. Great condition. Does already have disc tabs. Just very slightly sloping top tube like above. Very retro. Tempted to go with simple cable actuated discs though (other bikes have cantis and calipers) to have one of each.

1 1/8 steerer frames with generous tyre clearance?

Re: Wow again. Semi-fat with cantis, I see what you did there. Top notch. What rims did you use? Could you give an estimation how fat a rim one could use so the cantis are not too close for operation? Have found trials rims up to 47mm. Which one did you use?

1 1/8 steerer frames with generous tyre clearance?

Re: Wow had never considered a 1x1. Surly in my mind is always a newschool brand, unbelievable how long they've been around. Now I have to find me one of those early models where the sloping is not as pronounced. They look perfectly like the kind of retro MTB I was imagining. And I had...
