1 1/8 steerer frames with generous tyre clearance?

Edit: oops that went in the wrong place. Any chance to get this in the regular 1998 topic?

Hello,

could you give me any pointers which steel frames have really generous tyre clearance? Basically my criteria are steel, clearance, 1 1/8 headset, and not aggressively sloped if possible.

Here is a pic of an older 1" steerer Stumpjumper with 650b x 2.0 tyres, just for reference. Clearance is awesome, something like that would be ideal, but looking for 1 1/8 front. Seems chainstays got shorter later on on many frames. Fork not needed. Not looking for offers, but just pointers would be great. Many thanks.

How strange... i was just pondering what to do with the spare 650b rims and some other parts i've got knocking around. The thought occured of finding another old 26" frame to use... let me know how you get on!

Re:

The sliding dropout Voodoo Wanga is apparently quite happy with 650b wheels when the dropouts are slid fully rearwards.

Re:

Ideally I'd like to do something like this viewtopic.php?f=6&t=195070 but based on a 1 1/8 steerer because there are more options. Unfortunately many of the newer frames are so strongly sloped, which is not as easy on the eyes for someone who's first mtb was perfectly level at the TT.

Re:

Wow had never considered a 1x1. Surly in my mind is always a newschool brand, unbelievable how long they've been around. Now I have to find me one of those early models where the sloping is not as pronounced. They look perfectly like the kind of retro MTB I was imagining.

And I had already laid my eyes on a somewhat beat up Max OR Kona Explosif ...

Ignore the bars, but here's mine with the 3" Gazza up front and a 2.7" Bonty tyre in the back. I'm sure I did also run the Gazza in the back.

Re:

Wow again. Semi-fat with cantis, I see what you did there. Top notch.

What rims did you use? Could you give an estimation how fat a rim one could use so the cantis are not too close for operation? Have found trials rims up to 47mm. Which one did you use?

Those are trials rims. Onza ones, I have a couple sets of them, one with 32mm front, 38mm rear and one with 38mm front and rear, not too sure which are fitted there.

I think with the 3" Gazza I had to change the setup on the cantis a bit so the straddle wire cleared the side knobs. Tried Maguras but the crossover hose caught the tyre and tried Vs but the cable was too close to the tyre for comfort.
