GT Avalanche 1998 Frame with New Build

Nice, keep me posted on the rebuild. I have found that my 20" frame I have is actually a not long enough for me now given that I've got a 70mm stem on it, so I've had to wack the seat back as far as it goes - just shows that they were designed for long stems I think.

GT Avalanche 1998 Frame with New Build

Looks bang on original except for pedals and wheels from what I can see. Although I have a black seatpost. Those Kore stems and bars are very light too from what I recall. Does the fork still operate well?

GT Avalanche 1998 Frame with New Build

Re: Hey Seb, that sounds really cool- please put up pics! I recall that it had X221s, with Shimano STX-RC rear hub and some GT branded front hub. Hope to hear about how you like it back on the dirt. PS upload attachment section is the section just below the part where you enter and exit...

GT Avalanche 1998 Frame with New Build

Re: Thanks for that, spent a while picking out the bits to make it right. Indeed it is an Outback, a bit mountain biker cliche' but suits me fine. Just before the ugly model!

GT Avalanche 1998 Frame with New Build

Re: Cheers mate! Still rides pretty well, now that it's slackened out a bit with 100mm forks. The Z2s were so smooth, and pretty light too, but my damper broke so it was very bouncy haha. Interesting to hear that there were a few in the shop, which shop was it? I'll go for a ride on it this...

    1999 Schwinn Homegrown Elite

Re: One of my mates has a blue one of these, and has it built up with a series of nice parts from a Giant XTC from the last couple of years. I'll try to get a pic to post up if you're interested.

GT Avalanche 1998 Frame with New Build

Re: Hi guys, just took this rig for a cruise on the weekend. Unfortunately the trails sucked, but was once again happy with the bike. Haven't got around to resolving the brake line issue, but will soon. Here are some more pics.

GT Avalanche 1998 Frame with New Build

Re: Cheers guys:). I'm really happy with the way this build rides, taken it on a few trails and it goes well. I'll clean it up and see if i can get a few more pics for you, after I've had a go of finishing those brake lines.

GT Avalanche 1998 Frame with New Build

Re: True, I haven't cut them- same for the front one. I don't have a bleed kit so I cant chop them yet. Might go to the LBS. Rides just as I remember- stiff, with good balance front to rear. Just a bit slacker than it originally was as its a 100mm fork vs the 75mm Z2 that it came with from the...

GT Avalanche 1998 Frame with New Build

Re: Actually the seatpost clamp is integrated- so painted with the frame- is this unusual? The headset was a bit of a risk, but I found a cheap used Chris King in good condition, so thought Id risk it.

Re: Just re-igniting an old thread, but wondering if you can upload or link the catalog pages that show the gold colour? I can't seem to see your photos in this thread, but I've uploaded my build for my gold GT Avalanche 1998: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=320335

GT Avalanche 1998 Frame with New Build

Hi guys, just finished a new build for my old GT Avalanche frame that I had sitting in the shed. Mix of second hand parts and new bits. Does anyone know why this colour is so rare? I was told by my friend who I bought it from (who bought it new) that it was 1 of 3 of these gold frames in...

What year is my GT Avalanche???

Re: Hi guys, bringing back an old post, but had to post up my bike which is the same frame as this. It's definitely a 1998 - i bought mine back in about 2002 off a mate, and it pretty much had the standard parts on it listed in that catalog image above; Z2 BAMs with 80mm travel, SLX / XT mix...
