And now, a Swingbike, for €175!! Actually I tried one of those in a bike festival recently. Instead of pedaling, you need to move similarly as if you were rowing. It takes a few seconds to learn the moves but then it's quite fun!!

Another interesting one. A Hercules Arizona, an 80s mtb with a Sachs fork (very similar to early Manitous) and very early disk brakes. Going for €170. Sachs was the German manufacturer producing mostly gear hubs and some derailleurs. It was bought by SRAM.

Scott Wind River / Windriver build help

I had a 1991 version (pink one). Great bike, we did all of South America with it, pulling a trailer. No idea about seatpost diameter, we sold our bikes in Ushuaia. I know rear wheel had a 130mm axle width and not too much clearance...

    Show us your Gravel Bikes

If you look at a gravel bike more like a "common sense road bike" instead of a watered down MTB, they make a lot of sense. You can ride in most surfaces, add accessories like racks and mudguards,... My only issue is that they come with drop bars, which most people don't want/need, but buying a...

    Ugly modern bikes

Bikes are the same as everything else. Clothes, architecture, music... Older songs seem better than the current ones. But that's because we only remember the good ones, while we have to listen to all the current crap. In 10 years time we'll love the 5% very good stuff being currently produced...

    Show us your Specialized

1992 Specialized Stumpjumper. Found mostly stock (except for tires and sticky grips). Converted to "dad's bike" for when we visit the in-laws. I like that: -it's one of the few if not the only Stumpjumper with eyelets for racks -the original catalogue said it could accommodate 2.5" tires. Not...

    Riser bar or riser stem?

Now that I "finished" the bike, I had to post a picture of it. In the end I went for the high stem/flat bar combo, which I prefer aesthetically. Then made the usual trick of mounting something into the stem, in this case a big bell, to hide the high rise. Apologies to those offended about the...

How best to tidy up scuffed cranks?

Rubbing sanding paste (the one used to wash greasy hands) with water has worked well for me with seat posts. It removes most of the small stuff, and makes the bigger stuff less visible, while not affecting the overall finish.

    1993 Trek 7000

The 1993 Trek tech catalogue says it should be 27.2 (here). But it's not that rare for the catalogue to be wrong. Are you sure it's a 1993? Maybe the seat collar is a bit loose because the previous owner forced it?

And I don't know how to define this bike. 80's mtb? time-trial bike? one of those tricks bikes so popular in Germany? According to the seller, he got it as a marketing gift from a matress company... Brand Schlaraffia, selling for €125

    Found in my local classifieds...

This time I've seen a funky e-cargo bike, model Zurrell CS100 (?), selling for 5k. It does not seem to have a lot of cargo capacity that a normal bike could not carry with some racks and baskets/panniers...

    meanwhile, in Madrid....

Otero as you have found out is a classic bike shop in Madrid that has been there "forever". In the 80s they started their own brand, to great success. They provided road bikes to several professional teams like ONCE, and the Spanish Olympic team used their bikes often. Their MTBs were also...

    Best way to store bikes

Not sure if this has been already posted: Three tears to fresh retro rigs It's just an opinion, not gospel, but I agree to what he says. Bikes that are not ridden are no longer bikes, but objects.

    Changing headsets help pls :)

I always borrowed a headset press from my brother in law, but just last month I did my first ever AliExpress purchase and got one from ZTTO for 20€. I haven't tried it yet so can't comment, but at least it's pretty, and for that price worth not bothering with the homemade version. They also...

Safe weight load for basic chromo mtb

More than likely the frame will do fine. But the wheels might suffer. And if she is not into cycling she might take potholes or kerbs less carefully than you. A friend of mine suffers with depressions and one way to compensate is by eating, so after a few broken spokes he just got the bike shop...

    Thumbie set up

Thanks. Yes, that is the point, excluding the Sunrace/Sturmey Archer ones, that I have never tried, all other available versions are stupid money for what is basically a 35y old technology of a metal barrel moving a cable... For the price of the Microshift 10sp or some Paul mounts + Dura Ace bar...

    Thumbie set up

Thanks for the Bridgestone ad, saved to show my friends that don't understand me being a retrogrouch...! I'm curious that, considering the patent for those shifters is probably long expired, and how easy is nowadays to copy a design, why no other brand or even startup has not decided to produce...

    Thumbie set up

I got curious, and since the Stumpy above is from 1992, I went to check the Specialized catalogue for that year. All the bikes have the shifters parallel to the floor. This could well be for marketing purposes, so they can be seen in the pictures taken from the side, but still...
