    XTR M900 Chain Recommendations

I swear by KMC chains (I swear at Shimano -- literally when my Power Awesome™ broke the plate on a newish Ultegra chain a couple of years back). I tend to go for the fully nickel plated ones. The X8-99 being the right one for 8 speed. This seems to be simply called the X8 Silver now.

Turning an Orange P7 into a drop-bar ‘gravel’ bike

Turning an Orange P7 into a drop-bar ‘gravel’ bike

Yeah, they’re not quite as gravely as I’d like, and a little too beige on the sidewall. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be much choice on tan wall 26” gravel tyres that have the added benefit of being dirt cheap! I look forward to seeing that. Real leather seems to be much more expensive...

Turning an Orange P7 into a drop-bar ‘gravel’ bike

Had a few busy weekends and not much time to get the Orange P7 gravel/drop bar bike finished. Finally got it done after a last minute stem/fork/headset change. Now handles nicely and the gears are working really well. Braking not much to write home about, but that could just be the old XT pads...

Turning an Orange P7 into a drop-bar ‘gravel’ bike

Re: Re: You were absolutely spot on! Fortunately I had a random no brand short high 1” Ahead stem lying around. Unfortunately the F7 forks I planned to use were threaded. Fortunately I also had another set of F7s I was gone to use on Mrs R’s P7 with the right length Ahead steerer. Additional...

the unofficially cool MTB drop bar thread

I bought a set of 42cm/25.4mm Nitto B135AA Randonneur bars from Planet X for my drop bar Orange P7. Nice bit of flare on them, and a well shaped sweep to the tops. Kinda wished I’d gone for the 44cm option though, as riding on the tops is a little narrow and twitchy!

Turning an Orange P7 into a drop-bar ‘gravel’ bike

Re: Considering building an Orange P7 drop-bar gravel bike? It’s been raining, so decided to refresh my slightly shabby OnZa Chill Pills. Now with matching orange logos! Before: And after: Now, when it stops raining, I’ll get them fitted.

Has anyone built a Gravel bike using a retro frame

Re: Re: Thanks. Might look into those if my Schwalbes are a little lacking in off road grip.

Has anyone built a Gravel bike using a retro frame

Love the Spins! What tyres are you using BTW? Look like they have rather more grip than mine, and with all the skinwall goodness you need!

Has anyone built a Gravel bike using a retro frame

Well, I’m currently building up an Orange P7 ‘gravel’ bike. Really it’s just a drop bar mountain bike, but ‘gravel’ probably wetter represents what I’ll use it for. Partly it’s because I’m going on holiday to Cornwall where there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of off road trails, but the...

    Mountainbiking in Vancouver

It’s been a very long time since I’ve been riding in and around Vancouver (pre North Shore!), but I had some amazing rides around Whistler. The mountain downhill roads are amazing, but maybe too much on a dodgy pelvis. There’s plenty going on around the bottom of Whistler and Blackcomb though...

Turning an Orange P7 into a drop-bar ‘gravel’ bike

Re: Considering building an Orange P7 drop-bar gravel bike? The stem felt possibly a little too long while I was scooting around the courtyard. Didn’t get much of a chance to think on it as I was heading towards the barn at a rate of knots. No brakes and only flip flops to slow me down :shock...

Turning an Orange P7 into a drop-bar ‘gravel’ bike

Re: Considering building an Orange P7 drop-bar gravel bike? Since the last post I’ve been slowly refurbing it’s. Basically a lot of Gunk, sanding and Autosol. Slow progress as I’ve been fairly busy with other stuff. Plenty of the dreaded alu worms on the Shimano shifters... Some 150 grit...

90s (7spd) frame and new wheels

As the others have said, dead easy. I’ve got an OnZa kit on my Orange P7 single speed. Take a look in my sig below for more details. Good luck with the build.

Same outer cable for gear and brakes

I agree with Bluetomgold. While you can get away with using brake outlets for gears (and I have when desperate!), you get better shifting with the right cable. Also, most (all) of the gear cable is 4mm these days — at least for the stuff with the right end to fit in STI shifters. Running 4mm...
