    7 speed Altus shifting

Hi all, I have a Shimano altus 7 speed rear derailleur circa 1995. What are my options for shifters at the bar end. Will modern thumb shifters work such as SL M315 or do I need something of the same age? Thanks

1995 Specialized Hardrock GSX project - Complete with Photos

Thanks for posting this. It looks superb. You've reinforced my hope for this project. Do you know how big these tyres are? I was thinking of going 2.3 wide. These look maybe 2.1? Thanks again. Love your bike

1995 Specialized Hardrock GSX project - Complete with Photos

Agreed. I realise this was base level back in its day. But having not had a retro MTB before I had to have this thing. I think my key want for this is urban fun. I have other bikes for other things. This will be for hooning around town

Thanks. I was just this minute having that thought. It does look wide! I'll have a look at Sheldon. Thanks for the link. You read my mind

Thanks to this link, I think I've found the bike in the '95 catalogue https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/1995-specialized-catalogue.466428/

1995 Specialized Hardrock GSX project - Complete with Photos

Gave the frame a clean and give it a once over with TCut. It ain't bad really. The drive side chain stay has pretty worn paint but it really isn't bad. It has character. None of us are perfect eh. I'm thinking of maybe carrying the purple and yellow through somehow. Maybe brake / gear cables...

1995 Specialized Hardrock GSX project - Complete with Photos

The old crank was fine (apart from the pedals being stuck in there) but I'm fancying a 1X setup and as these rings appear to spot welded together so I looked for something else I found this 90's Shimano Deore LX M563 170mm crankset. I have discovered that 94bcd isn't the easiest size in the...

1995 Specialized Hardrock GSX project - Complete with Photos

Got the BB out. It was tight! But managed it. To be honest it was perfectly serviceable but the LHS cup was damaged getting it out. If I had an old knackered BB I would have just used the left hand cup off that and given this a good clean up but unfortunately I didn't. The shell was lovely...

1995 Specialized Hardrock GSX project - Complete with Photos

There are a few ways I could go with this. Thrown together beater, faithful resto with all correct parts, drop bar gravel. But what I fancied was a fat tyred fun bike. I'm not precious about having all the 'correct' parts but I do like the idea of being age appropriate. I'm also not fussed...

First step. Remove all the greesy bits and get it back to bare frame

1995 Specialized Hardrock GSX project - Complete with Photos

Hi all, sharing this ongoing project. Found this frame and fork at a local car boot sale (Flea market / Garage sale for my non UK friends). Although it had parts of a headset the fork was separate. As you can see it had chain, front and rear derailleur, bottom bracket and crank / pedals...

    1990 Specialized Rock Hopper Resurrection

Great project. Thanks for sharing. Just picked up a similar vintage hardrock frame from the local car boot sale. Unloved and dirty so looking forward to getting the polish out and building a fat tyre urban bike like yours 👌

Bianchi Gold Race Team 2000 - Visual tweaks / Parts Upgrades

Re: Couple of final changes on the Bianchi. One for the purists and a couple definitely not. Firstly, managed to get my hands on a Selle Italia Flite Titanium saddle so it now has that distinctive profile. I believe this one with the oval emblem on the back is a late 90's model so pretty much...

Bianchi Gold Race Team 2000 - Visual tweaks / Parts Upgrades

Re: Really nice. It was nice before but slightly harsh at the front end. The carbon has just given that little bit of forgiveness. Unless I'm imagining it!

Bianchi Gold Race Team 2000 - Visual tweaks / Parts Upgrades

Re: Thanks. I wanted to just break up the red and silver and give it something else. I think it works. It's hard creating a visual balance. It rides great. I really like steel but alu with a carbon fork is stiff but with enough to absorb the shock

Bianchi Gold Race Team 2000 - Visual tweaks / Parts Upgrades

Next things i might look out for is a period correct Selle Italia Flite Titanium Saddle and a slightly shorter stem. 80mm i think would strike a balance between look and riding position.

Bianchi Gold Race Team 2000 - Visual tweaks / Parts Upgrades

Re: I wanted to further improve the spec of the bike without 'modernising' it. I looked around for some original Bianchi carbon forks but they don't come up very often. 1 inch carbon forks aren't that common anyway. I finally found one set of Bianchi forks but missed out on Ebay. I also missed...

Bianchi Gold Race Team 2000 - Visual tweaks / Parts Upgrades

Re: The first time I took the bike out I realised that because of the shape of the standard Bianchi bars, the brakes were quite low down. I was just too stretched out. I could ride comfortably on the tops but I wasn't comfortable on the hoods. On my very first ride a car pulled out in front of...
