    Replacement brake Bosses

Greetings Depending on what brakes you are using. The important distance is the length of the bearing surface not the overall length of the studs. Also use some blue locktite on the stud threads if you are concerned about them loosening. Hope this helps. Cheers

    Bike grease, which type??

Your Teflon grease is IMHO one of the best for bearings. Cheers

Suntour Thumbies - clues for strip down???

Greetings Had a set lingering in the shed for years, and recently used them for a new build. Flush them with GT-85 or such, and then occasionally use a drop of wet chain lube at the lever base where it's attached to the mount and they will work a treat. Regards Carl in Florida

    8 speed chain recs?

IMHO Shimano IG chains shift the best, and are long lasting, however use a SRAM or KMC master link instead of the Shimano supplied pin.

STX RC 7 to 8 speed possible?

Remove the axle spacer from the non drive side and install it on the freehub side and then redish the wheel. You may have to purchase different thickness axle spacers to get it perfect(135mm locknut to locknut). While you have the axle out you can repack the bearings. Regards

    Mechanical disc brakes

Ditto on that, hydro's on a bike are overkill; properly set-up and adjusted mechanicals are great and no bleeding and/or fluid changes required!!!

    Old style BB removal

Remove the left(non chainwheel side) first. If you're not using the BB again, you can bodge it out with a punch(right hand threads) remove the lock ring and then the cup, pull the axle out with the bearings. Then on the right(chainwheel) side(left hand threads) will likely be more difficult...

    1975 Romic

Greetings; Purchased this Romic(built in Houston Texas) as frameset, added and changed components over the years, it now has a mix of early Dura-Ace and Zeus with 3ttt and Cinelli stem and bars. Had it with me in Germany 1976-1994 while with the Forces and did some racing and touring. It's...

    Gold chains

Use an inexpensive model from KMC or SRAM that fits your gears and replace twice a year. All drive chains wear and begin to wear your rear cluster, so to slow down the gear wear replace clean, lube and replace your chain often.

    Soma 'Groove'

Greetings: Recently I completed my new Soma 'Groove' build with an eclectic mix of modern budget components combined with upscale retro parts. Everytime I see a Soma frame I'm amazed at their quality. I've been a part-time bike mechanic since 1973 and in my honest opinion the Prestige...

Short Stack 1/8th threadless headsets. Oh, and shortest stem

Greetings; I've had the same problem with my new Soma 'Groove' and a new (FREE) SunTour fork. After much net searching, the shortest stack height I've found is a 26mm FSA TH-857, currently $25.00 here in the Colonies and I'ts not a bad headset. I can't help with the stem as I'm using my...

Replace them both, they're not expensive. I've always cleaned and used some moly grease on the bushings when doing my yearly overhaul.

    Headset Trouble

I no longer have any in the shop and there may be more versions currrently available. Get the permanent version that's really not permanent if a heat gun is used before disassembly. Make certain the excess is removed after assembly. Cheers
