Ah I think I saw you on the Graythwaite Hall climb, kudos to you getting up that. Lovely looking bike too.

Had a great time on Sunday riding the Trois Lacs route. The forecast rain held off and there was even some sunshine. A lovely run up to Coniston with a tail wind, quick stop for a cake in the Institute there. First big hill Cote de Hawkshead was ok, it has some steeper sections where I was...

Re: Re: I'm on clinchers so will have a couple of spare tubes, and hearing your advice might stick a folding tyre under the saddle just in case!

I'm riding the Trois Lacs on my Walvale this Sunday. Having just looked on the route map I'm a bit worried about gearing too, my lowest is 40x24! Hopefully got enough fitness to grind out the steep bits :-) Does anyone know what the state of the gravel track beside Windermere is like, the...

    Walvale rebuild finished

Thanks for all the nice comments folks. I didn't really think too much about the rims when I built the wheels, I had in my head that Open Sport were low profile and traditional looking... which they are compared to modern road wheels... but when you compare them to the Module E or suchlike they...

    Walvale rebuild finished

This is its latest incarnation, with new tyres, chainset, pedals & bar tape. Chain is new too, how does the length look now Ian? :D I followed the "big ring / big sprocket then add 2 full links" rule to size it! The bike dates from 1963, I know this because it my Dad had the frame built for...

    Walvale rebuild finished

Hi Vociferous, It is a great bike to ride - it isn't anywhere as light as my modern bikes but you can get a good turn of speed on it. The steel frame gives it a ride quality that I don't get on a alu or carbon bike. Since I took those pictures on this thread I have updated the chainset for a...

    Record front mech hybrid

Hi, I never did report back - yes it does work. It is a pretty easy job to remove the circu-clip & spring from the later front mech and transplant the cage onto the older mech without the circu-clip. I've been using it regularly over the last year and it is working fine. Great to have a...

Period correct components for early 60s Soen

I've been getting some miles in on the Walvale recently, it is a joy to ride, very smooth and different to my carbon & alu bikes, and it's always fun to pass other riders on modern bikes and see the look on their faces :D I found the bar end shifter much easier to use than the downtube...

Period correct components for early 60s Soen

Re: Re: Must have been the popular choice at the time :-) Dad says he chose the Simplex rear gear as it was the lightest around, but of course it was made of Delrin plastic so it is long gone!

Period correct components for early 60s Soen

Re: I have my Dad's Walvale (another Liverpool frame builder) which dates from around 1963. He built it up at the time for TTing & club riding with what he thought to be the best & lightest kit he could buy. The original spec was: Frame 531, campag ends etc. GB Ventoux bars Ambrosio Gran Prix...

    Walvale

Would be great to see more photos of the Walvales, I have just updated a thread about my 1963 Walvale with a new photo. Apologies for the rubbish picture quality.

    Mid 1960s Walvale restoration

Have just come back to RB after a while away and after seeing another thread on Walvale cycles, thought I'd post a new photo of mine. I did post a thread showing the completed bike here viewtopic.php?f=23&t=258025 but there was not much interest in it. Since then I have changed a few things -...

Thanks for the encouragement, I'll give it a go this weekend and report back.

    Record front mech hybrid

Last year i built up my 1960s frame using a 6th gen record front mech (has circuclip but cage has no lip), the frame actually has a braze on for a front mech with a cable stop, but I couldn't find one at a reasonable price so ended up using an extra cable guide instead. This works fine but looks...

    Sugino GT chainset

In the end I assumed the taper was JIS and went with a Shimano UN55 bb with 122.5mm axle length, 68mm shell. It does seem to be the right length to give a 44mm chainline on my bike, measured from middle of DT to part way between big and little rings. Hope this is useful!

    Walvale rebuild finished

Following on from viewtopic.php?f=12&t=243927, this is the finished article. My initial aim of restoring the bike to how it would have been when first built up was dropped once I started looking in earnest for period components in good condition within my budget! So instead I've tried to...
