Re: Hi, lots of possibles, it does look Macleans , but with the 3 vertical holes could it be a Carlton, Carlton did do a vertical 'Carlton' badge, and as you can see it is a bit like a clubman, below is my 46/47, so allowing for a couple years improvements ( dropouts, top of seat stays ) ...

    I seem to have bought.....

Re: Hi, I have a number of old french bikes, and french ebay is generally a sound place to get 'run of the mill' components, just ensure you know what the threads are that you are after, as there are a number of local variations especially with the older components. Good luck with the build. Terry

Re: Hi, just dug out some old photo's of a special race I sold years and years ago, and it certain is close to your frame https://www.flickr.com/photos/tk_photos ... 8660693997. My old frame had the original Carlton seat decal, which has the model name in, I seem to think it was 1950 - 51, I...

    merlin

Re: Hi, the serial number for Merlin is not obvious, these codes should translate into the sales ledger , hence may framebuilders would use a date code of some description, or just do them sequentially, but the meaning of Merlin serial number has been lost in the mists of time, unless there's a...

    merlin

Re: Hi Bob, I think I found it, one of vintagemanic2013's pile. It does look at first glance a Merlin Internationale, but I've not found one with only two cutouts in the lower head lug, but that's not say it isn't, it will need further investigation, as it does look very much like a 40's...

    merlin

Re: Hi, early Merlins were the business, but the serial numbers didn't follow any logic, the only way of assisting you is by photo's, can you supply any or put up a link to them. I have an old Merlin, built for comfort not speed, and can be viewed at https://www.flickr.com/photos/tk_photos ...

    Claud Butler mystery....

Re: Hi, the catalogues are only a guide, they were generally produced for the bike shows in November of the previous year, but I think in this case the 1954 CB cat maybe a better guide, and there is an International Club in that, that fits the bill. The vendor who sold you this ( what a good...

F C Parkes /Sun bicycles frame numbers question

Re: Hi, just to keep this thread on track, the first digit is the year and the second and sometimes 3rd alphanumeric is the Sun workshop designation or model. I've attached a dropout from a 1952 Sun Wasp which was made with early Nervex pro lugs, not Sun's basic later copy. Terry

F C Parkes /Sun bicycles frame numbers question

Re: Hi, the 'L' is the key, this stands for the Lightweight shop, so it was where the better frames / one off's were made ( Sun and Parkes ), the Manx TT stopped being made around the 'S' or 'T' ( 1951 ish ), you need to check the catalogues. The bike was designed for time trials, it was common...

Paris 'Tour de france' frame and parts

Re: Hi, I have had a quick look through the book, and it looks like one of these ones that will be difficult to give an exact year, as it looks like a wartime build or just post WW2. The dropout is a Paris one, and produced between 1937 and 1947, so that confirms it. The headset looks like a...

Paris 'Tour de france' frame and parts

Re: Hi, Most Paris frames had a brash colour scheme, so it does follow, my Paris was ordered with Flam Blue and Flam Red, it is black now, but one day I'll return it to the original colour. I'll dig out my copy of the Paris book this evening, and get you some further info. The dropouts are for...
