    'old' versus 'new' frame sizing

Peter, specifically on your original question, if you are buying a modern frame, I'd start from your ideal riding position as far as the dimensions of the saddle/bar/bottom bracket triangle goes, and try to replicate it with the new frame. It may require you to think about stem length, seat...

    'old' versus 'new' frame sizing

I just bought a brand new road bike, by the German manufacturer Cube. The seat tube is 52cm centre to top. The top tube comes into the seat tube about 3cm from the top and slopes up to a tall head tube. This is a "sportive" geometry frame which is what I'll use it for - long rides and lots...

120mm OLN Rear Hub / Wheel Dilema

My daily bike runs a 126oln hub and it was only recently I measured the dropout width and it actually springs back to 122mm when the wheel is removed. It's been like that since I got it new in 1985, without me ever noticing (I'd never heard of OLN until I got to this website). No cold setting...

    Planet X Kaffenback (modern content)

Retrotastic! Very, very nice and thoroughly practical too. The attention to detail in the photos is stunning - you've even managed to source some autumnal leaves the exact correct shade and scatter them naturally on the ground - brilliant!! Seriously though, for me this has a wow factor...

    Sourcing dropout adjuster screws

gavr, thanks for the info. Mine are 38mm overall length. I've had them screwed right in so longer or equal length would be fine. What size do you have?

    Sourcing dropout adjuster screws

My 1984 Raleigh frame is now stripped to go to the paintshop. The (Suntour) rear dropout adjusters were a pig to get out and have been damaged in the process. Does anyone know where I might source a pair of these? The knurled end knobs are intact and can be reused if needed so it's just...

    Lights for winter night rides

You could be right, but notwithstanding that there is a lot of willy-waving to be heard on webforums about how many lumens Tom, Dick or Harry have, I wouldn't like less than the 900 lumen light that I have, for serious and regular fast riding in the dark. What doesn't often get mentioned is...

    Lights for winter night rides

Magicshine, Monty Dog, that's what I was trying to remember. I think they claim the same brightness as my UK-made exquisitely-engineered £200 light. You have to wonder what corners are cut to get the price that low. I wouldn't criticise anyone for buying one (it's very tempting for sure)...

    Lights for winter night rides

There are some pretty good (and lo o o ong!) threads on this subject on the BikeRadar forums (Road and Commuting sections). There are some extremely attractive price deals on Hong Kong sourced gear (seems too cheap to be good quality if you ask me) or US/UK brands offer high quality...

    When men were men !!!!!!

Looking ahead to my winter commuting (just purchased studded tyres for my deep-winter bike!) these are fascinating photos. Haven't seen them for years. Thanks for sharing.

    Hardworking classic

We see so many photos on here of pristine machines that I thought I’d redress the balance with a couple of photos of an old classic in real-world everyday hardworking use. My old 1985 Raleigh Gran Tour is now in use as a winter trainer in prep for some big Sportives next season (I’m saving...

    collecting on a budget

Group hug! Roadking, your honesty is refreshing, and my faith in the good-blokedom of this forum is restored! :D Can you believe my first car was an Allegro? I loved it dearly but never was there a greyer porridge if I'm honest!

    collecting on a budget

Someone pass that man a shovel. . . explaining a blunt put-down does not change it from being a put-down. . . brilliant  Johntomjoe, as the RetroBIKE logo top left says, "if it's old school it's in" so don't listen to the elitists on here. Just because we don't ride a 1982 Colnago or...

Freewheel and gear tech help required

Looks like smaller than 42 if the big ring is 52. Which is in your favour if you have hills to climb! On the comments about crank length, looking at your frame (50cm size?) if you have short legs you would definitely want 170mm IMHO.

Freewheel and gear tech help required

Hi Will, My old 1984 6 speed hack (126 OLN spacing) was recently converted to 7 speed and is working great with a 50-34 compact chainset up front. In my opinion, it's definitely worth having an extra cog over an old 6-speed, although I agree with the argument about maybe not needing a huge...

    Aende, back on the road.

Bloomin' eck, you must be tall!! Nice to read a similar story to mine. My Raleigh Gran Tour, bought as a new frame in mid 80s, is back on the road after 20+ years in storage in my garage. Mine was also built up with some 600 but a mish mash of other stuff too. Unlike yours, mine is a...
