    '87 Raleigh Montage

Wow - this was my first mountain bike! I think mine was an '88 and it had a U-brake. I sold it to my dad when I bought my Stumpy. I think he may still have it. That colour is fab!

Advice on chain and poss chainring/cassette replacement, pls

Hi all, New KMC chain on and it feels and sounds lovely. No problems with skipping noted/felt so far, so hopefully, all is good. :-) Thanks again for all the pointers on this - I really appreciate it. I'll still try a 48 front when I can get round to it. I never go big/big, so just need...

Brilliant - thanks for the heads-up on that!

    grip suggestions.....

I got some generic foam grips from Wilkinsons hardware store when my 20yr old rubber Spesh grips melted(?!) and they are brilliant!

Tim Gould's Team Peugeot Roberts White Spider

Wow, that's a good memory! I can't remember the course at all. I think the Expert Race had a false start - got a photo of some chaos on the start line. To whomever is the current very lucky owner, if this bike ever comes up for sale again, I'd be seriously interested... :D

Advice on chain and poss chainring/cassette replacement, pls

Thanks. Hopefully, I'll be borrowing some tools today and whipping the cassette off.

Advice on chain and poss chainring/cassette replacement, pls

Yes, I really let it slide on this one - no excuse really for the sake of a tenner or so. In fact, it may be worth just getting a new one anyway. Have just found some new 7 spd HG20, 30, 41s for about £10. Are these a standard fitment?

Advice on chain and poss chainring/cassette replacement, pls

Great advice and websites there! I think 48 would be better than 52 for sure based on what has been said. I'm sure my other Spesh is 48/12 from memory. Blimey, I wish! :D My cadence is usually around 60-70 ~ 20mph, so a 48 would buy me 2mph. Maybe I just need to pedal faster! :lol...

Advice on chain and poss chainring/cassette replacement, pls

Great, cheers! BCD is 64.7mm on a 5 hole -> 110. If I'm going to change this, would I get away with going to 52T as I'm running out of gears at the mo running a 46/12 ratio?

Great - many thanks for that! £14 for 46T seems pretty good to me.

Advice on chain and poss chainring/cassette replacement, pls

Thanks again, folks! Chain measures 12 1/8 pin to pin! So time to order some KMCs! Cheers again - I really appreciate it...

Advice on chain and poss chainring/cassette replacement, pls

Many thanks for the advice and quick responses! Please forgive my ignorance, but are Quicklink and Powerlink terms for the same link-system? A quick look on eBay has thrown up SRAM 850, 870, 890 for between £11 and £20 and KMC X/Z82 for about £10. Not wishing to start a SRAM v KMC...

Advice on chain and poss chainring/cassette replacement, pls

Hi all, I've never changed the chain on my '92 Stumpy Comp, which is a sin I know, so it's time for me to get it sorted as I'm now getting back into biking and using this as a road hack. Please see pics of chainrings and cassette attached. The chainring teeth do seem to be a little out of...

    1992 Stumpjumper Comp

Morning, all. Here's my well-used 92 Stumpy Comp that I've made into a road hack. Apart from the USE Seat post, pedals, slicks and non-retro bar-ends, she's all original, which leads me onto my reason for posting as the chain is original too! Shame on me I know! I have some questions...

Tim Gould's Team Peugeot Roberts White Spider

Wow - what a corking picture! ...and congrats on the placing! :D Somehow, I managed 5th in Juniors! Do you remember how insanely hot it was? Sadly, that was the one and only National I did, but was a great experience!

Tim Gould's Team Peugeot Roberts White Spider

Hi all, Was just Googling my MTB hero, Tim Gould, and came across this thread. Dr Bond, full respect to you for getting your hands on something so iconic! I raced at the Forest of Dean round of the Mountain Bike Club 1989 National Championship Series in July of that year and got the...

1989 Specialized Stumpjumper - an old flame rekindled

Thanks, everyone! Yes, those colours are simply fab. My kids don't get it at all... "Daddy, why have you got two pink bikes now?" It's currently wrapped in bubble-wrap as I've already had one small accident whilst moving another bike around it. If the wife would allow, I'd hang it in...
