    Retro Chains

At the risk of looking a complete cheapskate........ I saw a gold chain in Asda the other day for £4.00, made by Bell. (it had Bell stamped on all the links). Judging on the price they're probably made in China but hey, there are 9 million bicycles in Beijing so they should know how to make a...

Help with a Sturmey Archer AG Dynohub please

Looking at Sheldon Browns pages it states: "Remove the cone locknut on the left-hand side and unscrew the left-hand cone." so I guess it has to be threaded. I think also that the LH cone is supposed to be a fixed cone and all adjustment made from the RH cone...

Help with a Sturmey Archer AG Dynohub please

It's a long while since I stripped a dyno hub but I'm pretty certain that the cone should be threaded. If you look at the pic here it looks like the cone would have to be threaded. Thinking logically it would have to be otherwise adjustment would be nigh on impossible. If you do have to strip...

PUTTING NEW TRANSFERS ON AN OLD BIKE

I would second that. I have used waterslide paper on a laser printer and the depth of colour is better and is more likely to last a long time than inkjet, especially if you are using compatible cartridges rather than genuine ones. But even laser printed transfers will need a top coat of laquer...

Perculiar Plastic (Shimano?) bottom bracket: removal method?

A quick bit of Googling tells me that FAG bottom brackets come as standard equipment on all Brompton Bikes so I guess any Brompton dealer would be able to remove it from the frame. Park Tools do a good FAG removal tool http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/park-tool-bb ... l-prod839/ but any tool is a...

Perculiar Plastic (Shimano?) bottom bracket: removal method?

Looks like a FAG to me. I have a very similar one which I bought in the '80s but have never fitted. They were very popular at the time as they were one of the first to use sealed bearings (mind you, Biopace was also popular at the time, lol). The removal tool is the same for FAG or SKF and can...

Re Spokeing a wheel, can you help

I've had spokes from angpatten on ebay. £9 for 36 inc post. He's very helpful and willing to mix sizes if you need to. Here's a link: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/36-STAINLESS- ... 84b6def576 I have Roger Mussons book. Not sure if you can still buy it in print but you can download the latest...

Looking for cheap Brown *Comfort* saddle

I guess you probably have a saddle by now but if not Spa Cycles now have their own range of leather saddles. Not instantly comfortable and slightly above your desired price range but well worth considering at nearly half the price of a Brooks. This one actually reminds me more of a Wrights...

Bike seen whilst out and about.

Outside Marks and Spencers. I wasn't mocking the bike by the way. Just that there was a thread somewhere about bikes people had seen when out and about and I thought it was a great idea. This is about the first bike I'd seen worth commenting on so in a rash moment I did!

Bike seen whilst out and about.

I'm sure that somewhere on here there is a thread about bikes people have seen when out and about. I can't find it so I'll post this here until I do. I was in Manchester yesterday and spotted this bike on my way back to the car. It's a very plain looking bike but the headbadge leapt out at me...

    27 inch wheels

I've only seen these on ebay and always in America. Do you have any links to sites in the UK where they might be available in 27 x 1-1/8? Ian.

    27 inch wheels

The biggest drawback with 27" wheels is the lack of tyre choice. 27 x 1-1/4 is pretty much it. Continental do a 27 x 1-1/8 but it is a modern looking thing with a slick surface and (IMO) looks poor on an old bike. Personally I REALLY REALLY wish Michelin still did World Tours in 27 x 1-1/8...

It was Rich34's '76 Galaxy - now The Dawes Galaxy thread!

He hasn't, I've already asked. 32-630 is 27 x 1-1/4 whereas 28-630 is 27 x 1-1/8. Doesn't sound much but I really struggle with 1-1/4's in my Raleigh Royal. Only Conti seem to make a 1-1/8 any more but they are soooo ugly and look wrong in a retro bike. My only hope is to find some NOS from...

It was Rich34's '76 Galaxy - now The Dawes Galaxy thread!

That's a lovely bike. I really like the original chainset and would have kept that on if it was my bike. I'm interested in the 28 x 622 tyres you mention though. Were the ones you got from the UK that size or are they 32 x 622? If 28 x 622 I'd REALLY like to know where you got them. I suspect...
