    Show me your Corratec's

Yeah, the tires. The funny thing is the work quite well, since I often ride a ways on pavement to get to the trails, and on the Waldwege they are quite fast. I do plan to get some Smart Sams for the bike, I have them on my "gravel" bike in 700x47c and like them a lot on mixed riding, but they...

How much does this hold up?

I would just say, "well of course you can't ride a motorcycle here, that's why I took my bike."

I regret already being such a killjoy, but I think we should not forget that the only thing you historically could not do on Crown Lands, and US Federal land, too, of course, is be a recognizably indigenous person... The US and Canada have a lot of "open space" but at a very high cost. Edit...

How much does this hold up?

I'm in Germany, and we have a 2 meter rule where i live. Bikes are legal on any way over 2 meters wide. But no one has defined what the edge of a way is. What is a way for me on a bike is a lot rougher and wider than a way for most hikers. In the US, I found it could range a lot from free for...

Yes, for me what was interesting is that there is no "relearning" if you go from Thumbies with high normal to bar end with low normal. The reversed spring and reversed cable wrapping cancel.

Sorry, i like to vicariously build bikes. I think of it as research for future projects. You could also go with the Randonneur/passhunter style of a nice retro flashlight, which you could retrofit with leds, if you wanted it to be more useful. Could even put a single red one in the end to serve...

So as I was trying to figure out a way of nondestructively removing the parallelogram spring, it occurred to me: because thumbies and bar end shifters wrap cable in opposite directions, using a bar end shifter with a low normal derailleur actually produces the same lever behavior as a thumbie...

Two great and very different builds. On the Marin, did you use the stock stem? It's always so tempting, because the resulting look is so low and slick. But it just doesn't work for long periods of time for normal humans, in my experience. :)

Even if you never used it, it would look cool, i think :)

AXA makes a little silver one, and they have a retro silver front light too. Wouldn't be too hard to make them play nice on that bracket

Very nice! Embrace the light/dynamo holder on the fork. Modern ones, even sometimes classic looking, actually work ok.

no, i understand what you mean. the main spring in the parallelgram. the musing about the cage spring providing enough tension without the parallelogram spring was separate. Seed planted. Plant will now turn into a weed unless I try it....

Welcome to the land of abandoned technology! It's fun here @benjabbi tried it out recently and didn't like it, so he may have a "cockpit" he'd like to sell. https://www.retrobike.co.uk/threads/bontrager-race-or.429587/post-3229726

you know, the cage exerts tension on the chain, encouraging it to go to the smaller cog in the rear, since this releases energy from the cage spring. I am half convinced I should waste an afternoon and take out the tension spring on an old spare, making it neutral-normal, and see if the cage...

Don't get me wrong, i like lugs, cotton take, and shellac a lot. But it's things like this The juxtaposition of the amazing detail of the frame with the Nitto bar and the digital watch on a foam shim. But that is all very intensionally done too, of course. There is certainly a statement...

There is a serious amount of ingenuity and fab skills in this forum. There is a small cottage industry for this sort of thing. In Germany, where everyone loves their Rohloffs, figuring out how to use their twist shifters on drops is a constant topic of discussion. Applause. (As a side...

That was funny, what Grant did. He wrote a blog post about the nexave rd, which is basically a steel version of the 951, from what i can tell, calling it the world's best ever derailleur, and single handedly caused a spike in the rapid rise prices world wide. I was looking at some nexave rds...
