A couple of basic questions about gears and levers

The other question that I've avoided thus far, and in fact will be avoiding until I've got my wheels built, is that of brakes. The Classic 15 was designed for 27-inch wheels and came with Raleigh-branded centre-pull Weinmann Vainqeur brakes. I've still got those and they've polished up quite...

A couple of basic questions about gears and levers

Rats. What would you recommend, hamster? As well as the Campag Records, I have a pair of Shimano 600 hubs acquired as part of a job lot that I was going to sell on, but they're only 32-hole. I'm only 5 foot 8 and weigh between 10 and a half and 11 stone, but on a 3-day trip I would be...

A couple of basic questions about gears and levers

Re: It's funny, originally I was planning to go with SunTour components as that seemed to be more in keeping with early 80s Raleigh tourers - but then I realised that SunTour Superbe stuff is basically as expensive as Campagnolo, and then I got that Campag Record rear derailleur, and as the...

Campag triple front mech, English headset & 27.0 seatpost

It's for a Reynolds 531 ST 1985 Raleigh touring frame that I'm building up - I've already got a Campagnolo Racing T triple crankset, 8-speed Record rear derailleur and brake/gear levers, and a 115mm Veloce bottom bracket... I just need a front derailleur to go with that lot. This is the first...

A couple of basic questions about gears and levers

A tourer - the frame's a Raleigh Classic 15, with a Reynolds 531ST touring frame that I got off eBay for £21. It was in fairly terrible condition, and just advertised as 'bike' but I took a punt on it on the strength of the Reynolds sticker I'd spotted on it. At the moment I'm not planning on...

A couple of basic questions about gears and levers

Re: Thank you! By the way, while I'm here, does anyone have any particular views on the difference between small flange and large flange hubs? Instinctively I think large flange would be better for a touring wheel, but I don't know why...

Thanks Chris - I'll keep my eyes open. Hopefully something will show up.

A couple of basic questions about gears and levers

Damn, I got outbid on a Campagnolo Record triple front derailleur too. Demand seems to exceed supply for Campagnolo triples. Is the Racing T the best option, or would a Comp Triple (which I think is a later model) do the job? The chainset I've bought is a Campagnolo Racing T, which is a...

Seat post diameter for Reynolds 531 ST frame?

Thanks for the solutions guys. I'll hold out for a 27.0 seatpost in the first instance. I don't suppose anyone happens to know what size headset i'd need for the sand frame? I'd have thought it's be standard English dimensions but I've also read that Raleigh had their own dimensions at one point.

A couple of basic questions about gears and levers

Re: Brilliant - thanks fellers. I got outbid on the one Racing T that came up on eBay (although I did win the auction for the Racing T triple chainset) but I've since found a Campagnolo Compact Triple for sale - do you know if that would do the job?

    1970s Carlton International

Re: I found the original ad online at the Veteran Cycle Club library. It seems to be completely original and even have the pump. http://veterancycleclublibrary.org.uk/n ... brary).pdf Sadly, something odd happened on the way home on Tuesday night. The chain came off the back derailleur and...

A couple of basic questions about gears and levers

Apologies for my lack of knowledge, but everyone has to learn somewhere and I thought I'd best ask the cognoscenti... Is there any way of attaching a braze-on front derailleur to a band? Or do you have to get a band-on derailleur and stick with it? The same question applies to levers - I've...

Seat post diameter for Reynolds 531 ST frame?

Re: Cheers - so it's probably likely to brass brazed, would you say? It's a decent frame by Raleigh standards but I'd imagine it's not likely to be anything particularly fancy.

Seat post diameter for Reynolds 531 ST frame?

I've finally got my 1985 Raleigh Classic 15 stripped down and ready to take for painting, which means I'm starting to think about what new parts to buy for it to build it back up with. I'm definitely going to need a new seatpost, the old one had been bodged in there with sellotape. Does anyone...

eBay find of the week... a Raleigh with 531 tubing

Finally a bit of progress on the Raleigh front! I've managed to unstick the stem and remove the handlebars at the weekend, and last night I removed the wheels, brakes and gears. Only snag is I can't get the cranks and pedals off yet, maybe Plus Gas has worked its magic overnight. Anyway, I'm...

Any tips for unsticking a stuck stem?

Rats. Now I can't get the cranks or pedals off. That's pretty much the last obstacle to having the frame stripped ready to take it to be sprayed. And taking the bottom bracket out. Plus Gas hasn't worked initially. More of the same?

Any tips for unsticking a stuck stem?

Thanks for all the advice - the stem and handlebars are finally free! A combination of Plus Gas (well worth buying a can of that off eBay), a longer Allen key with more leverage, and the tried and tested thwack with a hammer to free the expander bolt.

    Cable end ferrules: any tips...?

Thanks fellers. Ferrules snipped off and brakes work fine.
