1999 Specialized S-Works FSR XC M4 Build Thread

You made me nervous and I had to go check the swingarm on my '98. Thankfully, it was crack-free! Is the XC chainstay the same as the other FSR's of that era? It certainly looks identical to the one on my old Extreme of similar vintage.

    Lightest 26” bike parts? V brakes? 3x9?

I remember reading magazine articles about 20 lb FSR XC builds back in the day. I'm doing a weight-weenie build on my Y33. I ordered a set of brake levers similar to the KCNC's you pictured and they showed up bent with the barrel adjusters cross-threaded. They were insanely light but felt uber...

1999 Specialized S-Works FSR XC M4 Build Thread

There was a recent thread on low stack height sets making the rounds here but I can't lay my mouse on it now. There's a crank brothers headset that's supposed to be reasonable and a few no-name options IIRC. (edit - never mind, I think that was your thread in the wanted ads!)

1999 Specialized S-Works FSR XC M4 Build Thread

Nice looking build! I'm finishing up a '98 Stumpjumper FSR now and was surprised at how long the headtube was. I thought I could get away with an old SID I took off another large frame but the steerer tube was way too short! What were the specs on the bottom bracket you used?

    Noleen prototype DH forks

I recall the magazines didn't have much good to say about the Chubby's back in the day, at least in comparisons with other offerings at the time.

    My Cove Stiffee FR

I had a G-spot so have a soft spot for Coves. I loved the frame but hated that they threaded the linkage bolts directly into aluminum. For a bike that was meant to be hucked, it was a clear weak spot - I was great with Helicoils by the time I sold it.

    Centre lock Vs 6 bolt?

I have 2 sets of 26" Crossmax's, one center lock and one 6 bolt. Nothing to do with braking performance, but for some reason, the 6 bolts won't work on older SIDs. The heads of the torx screws holding the rotor on contact the inside of the fork. The center locks clear fine.

    Carrera Banshee info?

I bought this entirely for a beautiful set of Hope Mono M4's that were on it but I'm having trouble finding any information on it. Every picture I find of a Carrera Banshee looks completely different than this. Anyone??? Carrera banshee by Rented Mule, on Flickr

    Trek Y build

I'm not sure how they compare to tubeless, I have 2 bikes with UST wheels/tires but have never bothered setting them up tubeless. I mostly noticed the weight difference; everything just felt livelier. I run them with Kenda Klimax ultralight tires (345g) on Cane Creek WAM's so it's a reasonable...

    Trek Y build

Beauty! I'm going to use your build as inspiration for my Y. I agree on how great they ride - I have a fleet but default to the Y when I get a chance to ride. p.s. was going to ask what you're running for tubes? I swapped to a set of tubolitos on mine and it cut a lot of rotating mass.

Best suspension forks from the '90s?

The Girvins were great if you liked going over the bars frequently - they looked great but were nasty on a trail. I agree that the Bombers felt best but were heavy. I like my Englund Total Air Judy SL's.

    Wanted Spin wheel 26" rear

I'm looking for a rear Spin 26" wheel in rideable condition. Must be willing to post to Canada. I know the hate for Spins is strong here so maybe you have a burning desire to get rid of yours? I promise I won't post any pictures of my bike if I do find one (it's a Y33 - does that help?).

    1994 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR rebuild

Looking forward to seeing your progress on this! I bought the identical frame NOS in about '97 and it was my introduction to full suspension - I've had a few FSRs of that era since. I really like the look of it with the dual crown Manitou in your first post. My vote is for the crossmax SL's...

Summer project... 19?? Intense Uzzi SL build...

I'm looking forward to seeing build progress. I'm sure I'll keep my Tracer in some form forever and will eventually have an M1 if I have my way! I've had Horst Link bikes since 1995 and always come back to them.

Summer project... 19?? Intense Uzzi SL build...

Looks great! I don't feel like the 1st gen (non-VPP) Intenses get the love they deserve. They were the best of the best for years.

Retro Helmets! (I'll show you mine if you show me yours ;) )

I still use a Xen (the flat black version) - it's probably a decade+ old now...

Downgrading my ride, disc to v

I'm using Love levers for V-brakes, not sure on the model number. I'd originally planned to use the levers with V's but other project priorities left me with a disc-only wheelset for this bike. The mechanism on the caliper itself has a long throw to move the pads in but gives good pad clearance...
