Love it! For someone interested: I´ve had the same size SM800 and it was too small for me. I´m 1,86m with long legs and the OG seatpost was about 5cm too short. The high BB and long head tube of the Cdales from that era make it look larger than it really is. I´d say 1,80 is the max height.

The OG pic shows a wonderful bike (in my size too), but sadly nothing of this build is still on the bike. Hopefully the black paint doesn´t hide some nastiness.

As I´m also a fan of OG finishes I gathered some info over the last years sending parts to 2 different companies for anodizing. Happy to be corrected of course, I´m not a chemical engineer. Silver/clear ano is one and the same, it´s just anodizing without colouring afterwards. It usually goes...

You can clamp a hex key into your vice/onto your table and put the screw/derailleur on it to free up one hand. At least that´s what I do when I clean up/disassemble the pivot spring (the one that screws in the hanger). Should work on this one also?

Hi Jack, can you comment on the CB marked steel stem I posted above? I can´t find any reference to this style of stem being an original.

Wasn´t there a steel Cook Bros stem? I seem to remember others in that style, but none with a pass through brake cable. This one seems similar, but according to https://secondspincycles.com/1986-yeti-fro-xr309/ it´s not a Cook stem. These would be pre 1990, so a stem in 1 1/4" size would...

Congrats on the refinish, did you find the 2K easier to use than normal cans? I´d give it a few days to cure. To check if it´s hard enough I always do a fingernail scratch test on an inconspicous place. Ok hard to see with clearcoat, maybe with a flashlight? If it leaves traces, it´s not cured...

Yeah painting it would not last too long I´d guess. The original finish is likely black oxide. Technically only possible on steel with nickel, ie stainless, but the term is also used for blueing "normal" steel. The industrial process is hard to replicate on a hobby level, but there are several...

Dang, now that is something. Any more info about the history of the bike? (Disclosure: Just curious. Although the right size, I´m neither geographically nor financially in a position to seriously consider a purchase).

I was going to say that it´s not that expensive to get a custom spring made. No idea what the spring rate might be though.
