    Xenon compatibility

Just to expand on what hamster wrote, when Campy introduced 10 speed in 2001 they redesigned the geometry of the RD and applied the same redesign to the 9 speed groupsets. Xenon was reintroduced in 2002, having been dropped in '92/'93, so any "new" RD will work with Xenon 9 speed shifters.

165mm crank length - talk to me!

The idea that crank length is related to leg length is a canard that limps from the Seventies into the 21st century thanks to the opportunity that the internet affords idiots. Fortunately, even a cursory search of the internet provides adequate ammunition to debunk anyone who says otherwise...

Re: Re: What are the clues Keith? To my untutored eye, there's nothing that distinguishes it as being Italian.

    Early racing tt bike !?

The idea of a TT specific bike didn't exist in the Fifties and you can forget about "light with close clearance and stiff". A 531 frame with drops and fixed will give you an idea of what it was like. Come forward twenty years or so and you start to see more specific adaptations, which largely...

    9 speed threaded freewheel

Apart from the indexing, I'd be surprised if a 9 speed road mech can cope with a 32t bottom sprocket and you'd have to consider the overall capacity.

    need help with this frame

No idea what it is, but it's very modest: stamped dropouts, crude cable routing through the top tube and Unicrown fork. The fork and construction in general suggest no earlier than the Nineties.

Rear dropout conversion - new wheel?

That's quite a lot: 120mm to 126mm, or 126mm to 130mm is more usual. If you do it, then I'd consider bracing the brake and chain stay bridges, by tightly binding or clamping them.

Rear dropout conversion - new wheel?

Re: Re: The cranks aren't fussed about how many sprockets you have at the rear. You'll need new chainrings though, as 9 speed chains are narrower internally than 8 speed and fewer.

Rear dropout conversion - new wheel?

Re: Re: I've always advised against using the threaded rod method, so I was interested to see him get it right, first time. My reasoning being that one side is being braced against the other and the inevitable small differences in materials and construction, mean one side will be...

    New crank and bottom bracket

The Dawes will have a British threaded bottom bracket shell. Provided the Shimano BB is also British (and not Italian) threaded, then yes it will fit. Don't forget that a British threaded drive side (right-hand side) shell/BB has a left-hand thread!

Head tube reaming and facing question

All supposition, but I'd suggest that's a normal part of the manufacturing process and the excess lug should have been removed by facing before it left the factory. Ask your local, friendly framebuilder. Or it could be an extremely rare, one-off model built for an equally rare, one-off headset...

    Mystery Orbit frame

If it's 27.2mm then it's at least "decent". Gipeimme were second-tier, ie "decent", not "great". I'd guess 531 or similar from Columbus.

    Mystery Orbit frame

Check the frame carefully for "anomalies". The early Orbits were rather good, but the changes in management and personnel led to a decline in quality at times: I had one where the seat tube had been fitted upside-down! No tubing decal often means there's nothing to shout about: what size seat...

    Lo pro bullhorns

Not sure how you'd get them under the tape. Drilling will be fine: the holes will be close to the end of the bar. But, the cable routing will be poor: very tight bend where the cable first enters the bar. Better to use non-aero levers and enter via the top of the bar.

    Modern and Stupid BB Question

Campag aren't being contrary, it's a better system. With the bearings fitted to the cranks, it is the (cheap) cups that wear. With the bearings fitted to the cups, it is the (expensive) cranks that wear.

Homebuilt Custom Classic Single Speed Bicycle

Re: Re: Er... Fossala isn't the one swearing and threatening violence. The bike is illegal (for road use), dangerous and over-priced: those are facts. Facts which should be brought to the attention of anyone thinking of buying it. Mate.
