Any wheel builders about - opinions on some wheel problems please?

I have a second hand pair of wheels that I think have been poorly built. I'd like your opinions please, what's my best option? The back wheel has 1 very loose spoke, the issue is there no threads left on the spoke so can't tighten it. None of the spokes on either the front or back wheel have...

    Sintesi Snake projects

I've now got it into a rideable state. Put the chain on, set up the gears, put some pedals on, put the back brake on, and some grips. All I need is a seat post clamp, adapter for the front brake and swap the brake hoses as they're set up European style. I've wanted to keep this low cost and...

    Curtis SuperX 2001

Did some more tinkering today. The steertube is way too long on these forks, but today I got some Z2s with a shorter steer tube for another project. This other frame requires a really long steerer, so I decided to swap the crowns. This is when I discovered the crowns are slightly different...

    Sintesi Snake projects

My forks arrived today, I managed to bag some Z2s for a pretty good price with a 193mm steerer. Only problem is I need atleast 220mm. I have a set of Z1s with a 230mm steerer so the plan is to swap the crowns. Z1 crown removed, it's at this point I noticed the Z1 and Z2 crowns are different...

Today I started to run the cables and dug the saddle out. Probably won't do anymore till I find some suitable forks as I'd like to do the brakes next. I'm quite pleased with how it's coming together.

Chain line help - Hollowtech 2

I think it's sorted. I checked the BB width and it's definitely 68mm. I moved 1 spacer onto the NDS and the chainline looks better. Small to large clears the tyre fine, middle looks straight going to 5 and large to small lines up quite nicely. I think I'll leave it like that. Thanks for all...

Chain line help - Hollowtech 2

That's good info and may resort to abuse of the spacers. I want to stick 3x9 on this bike, I have lots of 1x9 and don't really want 2x9, but may entertain it if I can't find a better solution. Those deore are pretty much the same as my XT. This XT chainset has been on a Cannondale Killer-V and...

Chain line help - Hollowtech 2

So I've measured the middle chainring to center of seat tube an it's dead on 50mm. Next I put on the cassette and tested the chain line with an old chain. The straightest on the middle is to the 7th gear, I think it should be the 5th. Small to small looks reasonably straight, just a little...

Chain line help - Hollowtech 2

I have a 68mm BB so 2 spacer DS and 1 NDS and it looks too far over.

Chain line help - Hollowtech 2

Chainline looks wrong on my current build, any idea how I can bring it in a bit? I have a Hope BB with XT Hollowtech 2 cranks and the chainline looks to be at least 5mm too far out. I can't remove the spacers as the axle pokes out the other side unless I stack them all on the non-drive side...

A little bit more progress today but Things are never easy. I just wanted to dig the wheels out the shed, give them a clean and see how they look on the bike. The wheels I'm using are Easton and were used on a cummuter bike for many years and are in pretty shape. But I noticed the freehub body...

    Sintesi Snake projects

Over 9 years have passed and this is nearing the top of the list to put together. Originally would've built as a DJ bike but in my old age I'll build it as a run about bike and the frame is a little large to be a DJ bike. Almost all the parts that I'll be using are spares I have lying around...

    Kona Roast riding again

A bit of tinkering on the Roast today. I had read somewhere that the max brake size on the QR20s is 180mm, I had fitted a 200mm, so it's probably a good job that I've not riden it much. I decided to replace the no. 8 caliper with a no. 3 caliper. I thought I had a fully bled set ready to go but...

    Hope Evo cranks. Fakery?

Could be fakes, looking at ones on ebay the machining on the back looks cleaner and the crank length is engraved not etched. But it doesn't matter if they are fakes if they work, are strong, look good and were good value. If you really want to know you should ask Hope.
