I based that estimate on looking fairly hard for a set a month or two back :)
there were about 5 or 6 on ebay at the time almost all of which were in the 60 to 80 quid range but not selling that quickly
an offer secured the one that fitted my frame properly for 60 - wasn't in the best condition...

this bike was built in Chehalis, Washington (ie Klein's original factory, not Trek's, even if Trek owned Klein at this point) and still has many of the cool frame and tubing details Klein were famous for, even if the mission control headset and stem/bars...
an early 2000s salsa caseroll was on up on ebay last week - kinda kicking myself for not bidding on it. Think that would be about perfect for a comfortable roadie with some mild gravel pretensions
I suspect I have similar bike tastes to you @Tootyred and went through a similar exercise before just going retro anyway :)
the other maker that appealed to me was Brother cycles - I like their slightly alt approach to some of their bikes (eg mr wooden)
Soma make some interesting options - eg wolverine for gravelly stuff
nicer tubes than Surly (Tange Prestige) but similar vibe
Fairlight is maybe the most obvious option in the UK though - they seem to get rave reviews
you can pick up a cheapy removal tool from amazon for less than 10 quid - I don't see any good reason to spend more on one TBH, they are dead simple.
I also got a cheap chinese HS press from amazon for about 15 quid which does the job fine, though cos its not as precise or massive as the MUCH...

I think for medium profile cantis like these, the way the angles work is a little different and its not so much about getting the straddle as low as possible (as it would be with low profile arms) - more you want the straddle cable and the imaginary line from the straddle...
you can still get new 7 speed cassettes (even shimano ones!) and new chainrings are still available for both 110 and 94 BCD cranksets which I think were the two most prevalent MTB standards early on
