I think something called a hanger banger existed. Can't remember how it worked out fitted but the idea was to protect your mech and hanger from taking a hit, so I think it may have had something to do with wheel qrs. Available in anno colours iirc.(Id have to disagree on the kirk - a half dozen have passed through my hands, including a time trial set up road bike, but there are great elements to the design)

Mech protectors, like hub spoke guards, were found on "family cycling" market models, but did reach higher in the market for a year or 2.
Did anyone make a cnc/ purple anodised mech protector, or were they all 1/2 kilo of pig iron?
In the end they were killed by the alloy frame replaceable mech hanger![]()
