Your 'Retro' cut-off year

I think 1998, as that's when I think things subtley shifted in a way I cannot really complain. Although, for Konas, it was when they changed the font into the "trendy" one.

97/98ish for me, just before the onslaught of the must have a full susser with disc brakes not matter how or if it works brigade

I do think that is when bikes lost their elegance, and became more functional in appearance.

Hard to tell, but definitely V-brakes were the beginning of a slippery slope, which ended up in ghastly Kona jungle graphics, 4 arm cranks, Aluminium frames and 150mm fork travel.

Somewhere around 1996-97 it all went wrong.

That said, my favorite ride is a resprayed 1999 Cindercone singlespeed with a P2 fork.
...But it's mainly built up with older bits.

If ever there was a thread deserving of a poll, this one is it. ;)

For me, '97 is the "cutoff" for retro. My '99 Trek lacks any panache, whereas my '96 EWR screams "Hey, look at me, I'm different". Plus I always had a thing for CNC'd and anodized aluminum parts, which were pretty much non-existant past '97 (except for Pauls, Chris King, etc., but you get the point ;) ).

I was spewing when my 90/91? steel fisher ProCaliber with Suntour XCpro/comp, Sugino cranks and Manitou 1 fork was stolen!! Other than the XT cantis that were not as good as V-brakes or discs that is.

even found a picture !!

Hmmm, 1989-1994 were magic MTB years for me. But I haven't bought a mountain bike since 1994

This cut-off year seems so personal reading this thread. For me 'retro' is something which harks back to the past. Actually, not just for me, I think that's roughly what the word means; something that is immative of past eras.

So a 'modern' bike could actually be more 'retro' than, say, a 1994 Pace like mine with period correct parts.

eg. a 2006 Orange Clockwork is retro.
a 1993 Orange clockwork is old.

What do you think?
