Having bought a crusty old Specialized in the hope that some of the parts would be salvageable - I’m pleased to report that the hubs I primarily bought it for, turned out to be as good as I wanted

A few more parts are en route, but I’ve got some decisions to make on stem colour and what rims to use...

Yep those dates sound about right to me.
In 1990 the UK Yeti team was called Yeti/Cycleland (Cycleland before they turned into Evolution Imports/Bromley Bike) and they were using Fro and Ultimate frames pimped with all swag Cycleland imported back then and always remember seeing them around the UK race circuit, I think i was racing juniors back then with Mike Jackson.

So are you saying that what mine has is effectively an early re-spray to suit a team livery? I wonder what the original colour was in that case...not that it will be getting re-sprayed as aside from a little sun fading on the orange and the odd age related scratch, the paint is good.
I’m in two minds about removing some on the after market decals in case there is an obvious patch of faded colour - particularly the Manitou sticker on the top tube.
As to age, is there actually a way to date the frames from the number - as I had read that the numbers were essentially random? Mine reads U1072...

Wow - that’s some great history :shock: thank you
To me it seems quite feasible that mine and Yetichasers bikes could be the two in last picture, Yetichasers being the white one, and mine the black one - going by the sizes, which seem to match our respective bikes.
Perhaps I should try and track down the original owners?

I've just been chatting with Mike Jackson (pictured above), and it does seem entirely possible that his and Nick's bikes are the two that Yetichaser and I now own.
Mike sent me the same MBUK pic as posted by player - and says he believes it was about '92...anyone with the full magazine would be able to verify of course...player? I would say earlier, especially given the kit pictured (Etto helmets, M100 spd shoes both available from before '92).
The grey/orange scheme was nothing to do with Mike - who had moved on to ride an aluminium ARC after the Ultimate.
I shared the pics of both bikes with him and naturally he was pleased to know that they are still out there soldiering on
Not tracked down Nick yet as Mike isn't in touch with him any more, and he's not believed to be on FB.

I had another look late last night through my stash of MBI mags and they were Ridgeback/Cycleland team in 1990.
Found this too on FB last night and copied some of the text. - Unusual colour scheme as was resprayed by API Respray from new for Yeti importer Evolution Imports. We are guessing its approx from 1993.

Player - thanks for the corroboration.
The name Mike Jackson rings a bell. If I remember correctly he may have also worked/helped out at Bromley Bike shop. I used to go there almost every weekend.
One summer the shop hosted a local bike race as part of a summer sports programme, Buzz, I think it was called.
I won the race but more importantly remember chatting to the guy as I recognised him from the shop. I was in awe of him being able to ride those Yetis and have that lifestyle.
I vaguely remember those riders practicing in Shirley Hills which used to host cyclocross races back in the day.
Dave Hemmings was a local boy and I believe he may have been racing there as well.
Myself and Mike L rode for Addiscombe CC, a local very friendly and passionate club with a lot of prescence in the Shirley Hills races.
Once a Hero - i vaguely remember myself and Mike L (your bike’s previous owner) paying £450 for the frame and £90 for the forks from Bromley Bike shop. I think the RRP was £1050 for the frame and forks were around £160. I never saw Mike’s build until I saw this for sale a few weeks ago. Me and Mike lost contact as he went off o college and I stayed on for A-levels.

Ha! I certainly remember the ‘presence’ that Addiscombe CC displayed...if I remember rightly, the chant was “AD-DIS-COMBE” loudly and repeatedly at most events!
Were you a chanter, or was that a faction of the CC that you chose not to associate with?
