Bike insurance, with my much publicised & publicly be-moaned impending move to London, I am for the first time in my life thinking seriously about bike insurance.

Does any one have any recomendations on who is good for valuations, considering the custom & retro nature of most of my bikes?

I had my Marin valued by Stif about 12 years ago, they were quick and easy to deal with then, and I have been in contact regarding getting the fleet valued now. That valuation was easy, a relatively common bike with relatively mainstream componants.

But what worries me is they are now only able to value against modern equivelents, is this the best way to go about it? I mean a modern FS pace isnt really the same thing as a rather rare RC500 F1 for example.

Any one know of any dealers that are able to quote on replacement value in the objects own right, rather than quoting against new?

Or is it better to quote against new?

I can offer no advice on what their view is of retro bikes etc. but I'm insured through Nationwide (Building Society) and have made 2 hassle free claims in the last 4 years. They have never queried any part of my claims and have offered great service meaning that I had replacement bikes within a week.

Might be worth giving them a call and seeing what they say.

Looked into bike insurance recently when I built my last bike. One interesting thing is that although I could get insurance for any number of bikes this only covered the whole bike. If someone decided to nick the best bits e.g the wheels, that wasn't covered.

Insurance that covered individual components was breathtakingly expensive!

I've now oficially given up looking. . . most policies, max out at say 5K, and I'm lucky enough to be able to say the fleet is worth more than that> Even than it was still £350 a year. But pressing them hard, if the stable got turned over and they all got nicked, they wouldn't pay out as it was underinsured For £350 I've managed to buy a rather nice rifle, so if teh pikeys come back to steal the lead off the roof again, they get shot. Simple. And I have shotgun cartridges in the mousetraps just to make sure they wake me up.
The collection is now spread in 3 diferent lockups, so hopefully, the max I lose is 1/3 of the fleet.. .
Have asearch around, insurance has been covered a coupel of times. M+S seems to be oft quoted and reasonable. .
Howver, with the likes of some of our real special stuff, tehRC500 and the like, value is a hard thing to judge.
I've used the spec sheet sticky in the readers bike section to compile detailed specs of all the steeds, so at least I have an accurate record of what they are, backed up of course with photos.
Not sure if this helps, just my 2p. And I try to keep the heck out of the big smoke. ..
