XTR V-brakes front or rear?

How can you tell if an XTR V-brake is for front or rear (or are they the same. Thanks, Mike

you can tell which wheel it was used on by orientation of the pads, but other than that what ^he^ said

Agree with comments above.

Doesn't matter which end they're used on. Just make sure that the pads are the right way round! The metal cable noodles are sometimes different too but they're easy enough to replace.

If you had a pair with 135 and 90 pipes, most people would use the 135 pipe on the front and the 90 pipe on the rear.

Although the 135 pipe is actually intended for left hand front braking, but it just so happens that most people like them even for right hand front braking.

I actually use the 90 for the front (RC35s) and the 135 for the rear.... Both the Oranges are top routed to the right of the top tube so the 135 keeps the cable run smooth. Guess that's just me

If you align your bike from left to right, front at the right.

Then the rears are the ones on the left as you look at the bike.

OK clever-clogs, if there is no difference between front and rear calipers why are so many of the offerings on ebay listed as ‘front’ or ‘rear’?? (enter XTR V-Brakes in search)

I don’t see why they should be different but being soooooo retro and never progressing beyond cantilever brakes I thought I would ask the question….

Ah I see what you mean. No real reason that I can think of tbh.
As mentioned above the little cable noodle things are bent to slightly different angles but either can be used on from or rear.
I have a set of XT V brakes sat in my garage, the only way I know which set came off the front is by the different make of brake pads that are fitted. The brake arms themselves can be used front or rear.

I suspect the reason for the eBay "front/rear" thing is probably down to less experienced cyclists reasoning that because they took the brakes off the front of a bike then they must be "front brakes" ;-) or perhaps the brakes are being sold with cables attached, in which case obviously the front cables will be shorter.
Perhaps also you can get more money by splitting a set of breaks up and selling them as "front" and "rear" brakes?
