Are they any good or a bit of a gimmick / more hassle than they are worth ? :?

Cheers,

WD :D

I must admit I've never been unable to look at the rear hub when I have had to find out what gear I'm in. But IF you cycle regularly with a neck brace it could be just the thing.

In fact thumbies have an "integrated optical transmission status display" according to Shimano's marketing team.

I had to Dymo tape "You are in gear one, you are always in gear one" onto the bars of my singlespeed to avoid an existential "what gear am I in?" crisis.

What's the point of stuff like that? Do they do XTR spokey-dokeys and carbon fibre streamers for the ends of the bars?

please tell me where you got them :D i quite fancy a set of them myself :D :D :D

I got them free

With some M970 brake / shifter combo's

Actually took me a bit to suss out what they were

Can't get my head around fitting them - are they just another point for ingress of dirt and an extra (stiff) bit of cable outer in an area not needed :?

well , you now know someone that would like a pair if you decide to part with them ;)

I always view these things as a gimmick.

How much function do they actually add to a bike?

I would prefer to just look if I didn't know what gear I was in.

I am probably in the minority regarding gear indicators on bikes....

I like them and use them, to make sure I'm keeping my chain-line straight.

I don't need them if I'm running a double chain ring but on a triple I love them.

The inline cable indicators sure do look a lot less like 'my first shifter' than the onboard models.

what are these things?? where do they go?

You run your gear cable through them near the end of the shifter so you can see which gear you are in.

I particularly like having gear indicators when night riding as looking at the chain-line/cassette always feels a little risky in the dark.
