XT Thumbies and Hydraulic disc Levers

Retro Guru
I'm thinking of going hydraulic for the next season. Just bought "New in the box" XT 7speed thumbies (yes i am very pleased by that) But well, I want them to be streamlined with the brakelevers (like on the pictures), which isn't a problem with v-levers.

But I'm a bit afraid that the hydraulic brake levers doesn't allow that. I'm going to try the A2DZ converter and BB7's but they are a bit on the heavy side...

So does anybody know which levers I shoud get? I was thinking about the new XT series or maybe XTR?

Pictures would be great, I know that a few people tried this, I've seen paul converters, but they just don't look as good as the DX/XT

what someone needs to do is design a new billett thumie that looks cool on our retro steeds, but can clear a hydraulic fluid reservoir for thise running discs. . sounds like a plan ;)

I'm sure that you could use Magura Marta brake levers without any problem with thumbshifters. I've had a look and I can't see why not anyway, although I don't have any thumbshifters any more to prove or disprove this.

Anyway - the Martas are excellent brakes (IMHO), and light too.

yeah, maybe thoose will work, I'm hoping my thumbies is coming by the mail today. I just found out that the 3£ Promax levers I bought fitted for freestyle bmx works a whole of a lot better then Shimano xt levers strangely enough, they didn't work at all with v-brakes...

but it will be easier finding the perfect brake when I get the shifters.

The list.

Hopes: not a chance; reservoir is too big.

Old Shimano; no problem. Reservoir's low enough to have the lever at a steep angle ( but still okay-looking ) to let the thumbie work.

New Shimano ( XT and SLX ); best of all results, no compromise to the thumbie position.

A2Z converters; sorry, quite poo and useless under all circumstances. Get a good frame builder to weld you on a braced mount.

just tried it on, and can't get the adapter in the right angle...
think I might just sell it...

Sell the thumbies - I will have them :D

ha

no the thumbies are my new puppies! Just got them today, it was such a feeling opening an original box and find the new thumbies still in plaster...

I guess I have to forget about the idea of running discs on the old schools but they should work to have a disc upfront and a magura in the back, have to do some thinking I guess...

i've got an a2z adapter on the back of my bike... 2000 model rock lobster ti, and I'm running deore hydraulic disks with xt thumbies (bought them new in 1990) i run the brake levers pretty low so the gear levers are at a sensible angle. I think avid juicys or hayes fx9s should fit better, but if you can't fit the a2z the front disk rear magura option worked well on my clockwork til i wore through another rim...

re:

the question is, can u use another brand of hydraulic lever on a magura rim brake?

I'm thinking of the new XT series, a complete set with both front and rear isn't that expensive and an old used magura brake can't be that pricy...

will it work?

I have seen people running a2dz on Gt's but I can't get it to play right.
