XT M735 rear mech questions

I have an XT M573 short cage rear mech which I believe is 7 speed and it says max limit is a 28 tooth cog. Is it possible to run this in an 8 speed set up with a 30 tooth cog or is this pushing it to far?

they will run 9spd (and even 10spd with road shifters)

30t? Depends on the cage length but I think they are ok, I run an XT body with a 600 road mech cage and that does 30t but theres lots of chain to flap around if you dont get it right

using a 9spd chain helps as the ever so slightly narrower chain can help with the chain line

when you fit the mech, adjust as if it were a 7spd cassette, it will then shift just as well

Heres an older Deore mech indexed to a large SRAM 10spd cassette - it worked flawlessly (Shimano 10spd Dura-Ace barcons)

Worst case scenario of not clearing the 30t cassette is to use one of these

Yes, used to run them with 32T way back when, 34T was more of a stretch.

Of course you use a bit more chain so may loose more small/small usable cogs.
Nothing to worry about though.

Oh with modified 7 to 8 speed setups (a screw on small cog).
