X-Lite and Hope stem plug/caps

Both of these brands have the expander set-ups (head-doctor) and the X-Lite very similar.

Simple question, I like these top caps and have both but can I ditch the heavy expander and just use normal star nuts with these top caps without the need to make any changes other than tightening the bolt down enough as long as the bolt specs aren't proprietary.

Any help much appreciated

As long as the thread is the same size I don’t see why not, my hope ones have alloy bolt though so not sure how well that would hold in a star thingy. End of the day it’s only there to pre load the headset so doesn’t require a lot of force, you don’t actually need it once the stem is clamped up.
