Why is grease guard not a regular feature on modern componentry?

most likely because most modern components are rubbish

On a serious note, not sure if the patent is still with suntour?

I think there is a cleu in what you say about 'rubbish'... BITD component manufacturers tried to make components for life... I think... This century manufacturers don't care about 'components for life' anymore... money is what it's about this century..

Not intending to appear facetious, but to suggest this is the century wherein money has become all important is slightly naive...

Consumerism is not a 21st century phenomenon...

I think the more likely culprit is that manufacturers are unhappy now with the idea of consumers servicing their own equipment, therefore more effort is spent designing products to be either sealed for 'life' etc, or simply with incorporated obsolescence.

The latter obviously then allows for the inclusion of fashion, and therefore reciprocated consumerism...

How come such 'elitist' parts, if they were so good, did not continue in production or be copied/improved on by others?

I have a NOS black WTB/King headset. IN YOUR FACE LOSER! :p

I read somewhere along the way, that the WTB/King headsets fix the very problem they create by drilling a grease access hole. But I think you need to take into account that lots of new things were being tried and tested in that era of MTB. CK headsets were great. WTB grease guard was great. So combine the two should equal really great! But ultimately it wasn't (any) better than normal sealed bearing CK headsets, so it gets phased out.

I wish someone would copy and improve Tension Disks....those things are awful but I frickin' love em' anyway.
