Retro Newbie
Hello hello.
Just bought myself a Marin Eldridge Grade circa 95 really good nick with Rock Shock Judy's.
Used to have a Marin Pine Ridge back in the day until it got....nicked surprise. So it's nice to keep it in the family as it were.

Loving it..but from what I've heard and am experiancing the seat post is slipping. Any fool proof cranking up technique to stop it going south?

Cheers
Dan

Hi Dan, welcome.

A slipping seatpost could be the result of 2 things.

- the seatpost is a bit too small (they used to work with 0.2mm increments, so if you have a 26.8mm seatpost in a 27.0mm frame, it'll slide.

- the seatpost doesn't have the proper material/finish/profile for that frame. I have this problem with the aftermarket seatpost on one of my bikes, and found that the combination of a proper de-greasing and a lot of clamping force can help.

Is it the correct size post? There's a lot of sizes, all gloriously incompatible with each other.

Is there a size stamped on the post?

I had this problem with my Trek 4500. Problem was it had it's original seatpost. Never did solve it but it was damned annoying.

Sometimes previous owners neglect the seat post in keeping it lubed...it sticks..they force it and distort the seat tube to a point that it looks right but the standard one never seems to fit right again.

Find the seat diameter stamped on your current post then go up a size i.e. 26.4 to 26.6 if it's just a tad .

It's probably a 27.0 seatpost you need (don't quote me but the Bear Valley SE of 1995 is and they're pretty much the same frame iirc.. but if it isn't 1995 it could well be different size.
Clean it all up, sometimes it's just to much gungy built up inside the frame.

Did'nt even get a chance to get out on the thing* however post removed and cleaned with Dubya Dee dried and back together.

*6 and a half month old. :)
