Wolber GTX 2 - tubular or clincher rim?

Hi Guys,

My friend just bought a nice steel frame bike equipped with Wolber GTX2 rims and there are tubular glued in tyres that are worn out (may be original from new) and need to be replaced.
Do you know if you can fit clincher tyres with standard tubes on these rims?

GTX-2 rims were available in clincher form but sprint or sew up rims are designed purely for tubular tyres (often called tubs) they have a concave inner rim which allows the tub to be stuck safely on, this means they aren't deep enough for a standard clincher tyre beading to fit securely....

Thanks for your response Excel. I have a photo of the rim with the old tyre on it. Would you know which rim type this is by looking at the picture?

A picture of the label on the tyre would confirm it better than the rim picture but as Excel says if it's got a tub on at the moment then it will have to be replaced with another tub.

Tubular wheels have a shallow concave rim so would not hold onto a clincher tyre.

Some tubs can be fitted to clincher rims, but they are special tubs which aren't actually compatible with normal tubular rims.

i rode on some clement 2001 Tubs back in the day which fitted clincher rims from memory

Thanks Guys for your help.

We decided to bring the wheels to a bike shop for a service. We found out that the old tyres most likely weren't glued in, but just the rubber bonded itself into the rim, as it was never off for the last 25 years . The old tyres are not tubular, so I believe a new clincher tyre should be safe to put on. Will see if the rim holds it anyway .
