Use a headset spacer cut in two. I did. Works fine.

Will have a look G but it has been 6 years since I restored that bike. No idea how I got a 31.8mm seatpost in the first place as none of my bikes would fit one. If I find it you are more than welcome to have a couple of inches off it.
